DFW's surviving Christmas support thread! 4th Nov 07 at 8:55 AM
    Hi all,
Well its that time of year again & I'm starting to feel stressed already!! Christmas (my second as a DFW) makes me fee woefully inadequate because I LOVE being able to go out & buy lovely pressies. Instead now I have to hunt for endless bargains and compromise. Yes that can be fun but its hard work and takes up alot more time! Then there are the endless Christamas parties that sadly dont come free!! Work are having one which I'm looking frward to but theres another that I could do without going to but feel I should as its a good opportunity to get to know people...such is the dilemma of the DFW! Kids christmas presents, parties, family visits all need to be negociated & survived!
Anyway, I thought it would be good to have somewhere where we can support each other through what is a very stressful DFW coupe of months! Anyone interested?!!

Hi FF, I will join you in feeling stressed at this time of year. At the mo we have bought precisely one pressie and although I have a good idea what I am getting everyone, not sure how we are going to manage financially. I had these grand plans for saving throughout the year for Xmas, but as soon as we get anything money together, something always seems to come along to swallow up/use the money - the car mainly. We are spending Xmas with my family this year and I know I will be embarassed as my sister and my parents will buy us loads - we dont expect this, but they go overboard and I know that they are probably thinking that we are tight and our presents seem miserly in comparision.

Stress? tell me about it. I LOATHE shops when they are crowded, hate the overpriced tat which masquerades as "gift ideas". In fact I wish people would just send me a card and have done with it. Then I can go out in January in the sales and spend the money I didn't spend on buying things for people they may not like want or need.

Got 2 presents so far, (haggled for a remote control dragonfly on eBay - hooray!) but no ideas for others and this is when I go out and start to panic buy loads of stuff that no-body wants or needs! Eeek!

    Hi

Do make sure you pop over to the christmas board - there are loads of ideasover there for thoughtful and cheap pressies. I'm going to find all the extra spending of socialising difficult as we just won't have that money so will have to make excuses yet again...but I do like being in control of the finances and it's forced me to be more thoughtful in regard to presents. There is still LOADS of time to get sorted for Christmas and not make mistakes witht eh whole budget as well.

However, please remind me of this when I'm stressing my head off in a few weeks lol

I used to love Christmas until I had kids!

This is my first DFW Christmas and I luckily have some money put away so at least thats one less thing to worry about.

The big thing for me is cards. My family are really big on cards not the ones you get in a multipack but the 5 each type!

No idea what to get the kids so I usually end up paying a fortune for things that 11 months later are still in their packaging.

    Bah humbug! x x

Im going to have a dig around for some forgotton cards.

Last year I bought a load, lost them and had to rebuy them and then boxing day they reappeared. I remember thinking at the time that i'd keep them for this Christmas but god knows where that 'safe place' is!

Why is it that everything you put in a safe place is so safe it is never seen again! x

Picked up cards in January in the sales but still have to buy a couple of special ones. Fortunately have reasonable amount of Boots points and vouchers together with some Habitiat ones so will be looking there for presents. If you spend 25 at habitat then fill in the back page of their gift catelogue and you get a nice candle for free (worth 15). I have my eye on their martini glasses (3.50), flower tea lights (4) and their furry hot water bottle (10). Going to works Christmas party but saving money but not being tempted to buy a Christmas party outfit as my LBD will do fine.
I want to try to get all my shopping done by the end of next week so not tempted to buy anything else in the Christmas rush!

yey! this sounds good to me!!
    Hey guys i'm in too!!

I've got to admit I can be a bah hubug type. I'm really not into xmas....i can't even be bothered to type the full word. Although this is my 2nd as a DFW and i've learned a great lesson....start early! even though I feel like a complete moron sat next to my sack of ready bought and wrapped presents I feel content because I will not have to face the shops while every other moron in the world is out shopping.

I've got three prezzie's left to buy. I'm stuck on what to get my stepdad, i've only bugeted a couple of quid per person so I need something cheap and cheerful. al he's into is beer and horseracing (an interesting guy you know) and i'm fresh out of ideas. I buy him smellies every year and my mum will go mad if I do it again!!!

My biggest tip is ikea have picture frames on special offer for 50p!!! bought loads and added them in with other cheap prezzies to make them into gig decent ones. I can recommend that place for xmas shopping if anyones got one near as they do loads of cheap gifty stuff. also bought loads of tins of biscuits that they had for 2 quid and wrapped them up for aunties and uncles etc...

So yes count me in we'll get through it together xxxx

As this is my first DFW christmas i didnt really get too organised. i got a few bits in sales this year but could have done better if id started earlier. Next year i will be starting from january, with cards, wrap, few decorations, and i will check all the sales through the year for ideal hamper ingredents.

i love christmas so i will enjoy thinking about it through the year. I will also make sure i save any vouchers i earn through the year.

This is my first DFW christmas and WILL be my first where I do not add to my debt

I have saved an amount each month for xmas and will be drawing that out this week. I will then be on mission bargain hunt to make that money cover all my presents.

Well before that i was 17 so couldnt get credit! Maybe they should change the credit card age to 21, it just seemed like free money back then and i wanted to buy gifts for the family and friends.

Im making up some of my hampers at the min, to be honest im having much more fun doing christmas the DFW way as i get to put more time and effort into all the gifts. Even when i am debt free i will continue to give gifts this way, its so much more personal.
