Is there any benefit to staying loyal to the same insurer for "bricks and mortar" insurance i.e. if you change insurance company and then make a subsequent claim say for subsidence, can the new insurer claim that the problem may have occurred before they were the insurer?

Whenever you want to make a claim for something that occurred previously then you claim against the policy in force at the time, not the current one.
If you know there has been subsidence in the property previously then take care about switching!0 -
The ABI (Association of British Insurers) have specific guidance for subsidence claims after changing insurer.
Take a look at:

... and scroll down to: "If you discover subsidence damage after changing your insurance provider"0
