Help with a mystery item 11th May 18 at 12:33 AM
    Hi all
I'm currently selling some items from a deceased relatives house and I came across this item.
Does anyone know what it is?
My first thoughts were some kind of screen printing board? But the relative in question had no interest in this subject so I'm unsure.
It's the same on both sides but screw heads are visible on other side It stands at over a metre tall.
    Hope someone can help! Thanks

I thought it was a jigsaw tray perhaps?

Strange construction. Looks to me as if it's been part of something else. The end grain in the corners, and lapped dovetails would point to it being the top "layer" of a traditionally made furniture carcase, or a table with drawers. A top would then then be fastened over that, but there is no sign of that.
The "panel" in there is likely to be what is called a "dust board" to stop stuff falling into the drawer from above.
The frame is good quality oak. What is known as "quarter sawn" that has the "flash" of the medullary rays, (The lighter flecking you see) The panel looks like it could be ash to me, although I'm really not that certain.
So a part of a good quality "something"?
    Probably hand made.
