No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries May 2018 30th Apr 18 at 9:43 PM
Here we go again for another month. As usual this initial post has been shamelessly copied from the many previous months. A big thank you to er, me, sstevo19 for starting us off last month.

Welcome all newbies and regulars to this very friendly and chatty thread where we give lots of lovely tips on how to use up your stash and lots of support and encouragement if you need them.

Keep up the pampering and keep down the spending: let's make the naughty step an empty and lonely place this month (rather than one so long that it can be seen from space)! Will this be the month when the "usual suspects" rein it in a bit? Let's see..... (but I doubt it!)

Remember - those products do nothing for you while they are stashed in drawers, boxes and cupboards!

We are eternally grateful to Katie Clampet who set up this fab challenge in January 2010. Here's her original challenge post:

"No buying any new toiletries, cosmetics, perfume etc... until I have used up ALL the ones I already have. I got a huge amount of (really nice) stuff for Christmas but I am going to resist the urge to browse Boots, Asda, Superdrug etc, and pop another tub of cream, face scrub, shampoo or conditioner into my basket. I reckon the stuff I have will last me until possibly June. I have decided that the money I save I will put into my special holiday account. Anyone else?"

Lots of us have taken part in the challenge over the past few months (and some of us even years!!) and are making great progress in reducing our stashes and unnecessary/excessive spending.

Regulars can ignore this, but a quick resume is always helpful for newbies:

Why not add the challenge to your signature as a reminder?

How about taking a bit of time to do a stock-take and see if there are any gaps in your stash that you might need to spend on this month? Some of us set a budget for the month for essential purchases or to help with withdrawal symptoms, others like to go cold-turkey!! Other ideas which some people find useful: Listing everything out so you can cross things off as used to increase the sense of achievement, and putting a sum of money in a pot each time you use up an item to save for something you really want, or simply to assist in making future essential purchases "cash neutral".

Remember the challenge is about making the most of your money, enjoying your products, finding which products really suit you best and are worth buying, giving yourself a well-deserved pampering and breaking the habit of buying for the sake of buying. In money-saving tradition, it should also be about making your products l-a-s-t as long as possible (although the temptation of using an unloved shower gel extravagantly to finish it off is sometimes too much to bear!).

Brand new products (or opened perfume) sell well on eBay.

Unsuitable products can be repurposed and used for other jobs (shower gel/shampoo as handwash etc).

Some items can be returned to certain stores for exchange (for essential items or gifts!!) without a receipt.

Unwanted items can be recycled as gifts or for gift hampers (saving the money you'd have spent on gifts).

Unsuitable items can be donated to charity or a local women's refuge as mentioned earlier

It helps to avoid the places where temptation lurks for you; be it QVC, Boots, Body Shop, email newsletter, the supermarket toiletries aisles, Grabbit board, online toiletries browsing, seductive department store beauty counter offers etc. Remember retailers are making offers and promotions all the time, so there will always be another deal! Honest!

Good luck all for February 2018 and indeed the coming months, and remember to keep your stash lists updated, keep popping in for inspiration and support and to report your UU's and IN's, especially any sales bargains - we want a nosy!

Welcome to all newbies - the more the merrier. Please introduce yourselves so we can welcome you properly! Do de-lurk if you are lurking, this is one of the friendliest threads on MSE.

Oh - and anyone thinking "OMG my stash is FAR bigger than all of theirs, I cant possibly join" - believe you me, we have been doing this challenge for well over a year some of us - you wont scare us, and I can almost guarantee that someone somewhere will have had more and survived.... we are very supportive (and protective - so don't be scared!!) oh - and did we mention that are nosy??!!

    Useful abbreviations and jargon!

    WBA - Will Buy Again
    UU - Use Ups
IN - Self explanatory - stuff you've gained into your stash - warning: lines may be given out for unnecessary purchases or you may be sent to the naughty step!
NBI - A non-bought item such as a present, gift with purchase or free sample
WNBA - Will Not Buy Again!
Glitch - when a shop/online store make a pricing mistake so you end up paying less or even get freebies!
PYN(M/T/W/Th/F/Sa/Su) DELETE AS APPROPRIATE! - Paint Your Nails Monday/Tuesday...... it allows everyone to try and finish those dastardly nail varnishes with group support! You can never be too groomed for this thread. Also see PY(T)N... - for toenails!
Splutterer - the stage where an item is nearing the end of it's life and spluttering - also the most annoying and seemingly never ending stage!
GWP - Gift With Purchase - a sample or mini sized item
HG - Holy Grail - this is the product you would go back for time and time again, it does the job brilliantly, and is either economical, or so fantastic price becomes no object!
NPI - Near Purchasing Incident (OMG we all have those!)
LHJ - Long Haul Job - for those products - love 'em or hate 'em - that never seem to end no matter how often you use them
PRCP - Pink Rose Candle Philosophy inspired by Erma Bombeck who said: 'If I had my life to live over again I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose that melted in storage'. Don't keep things 'for best' or 'for a special occasion'. That day never arrives. Give the best to yourself now and enjoy it. (Thanks to McCulloch29 for introducing this thought provoking sentiment to us)
GA - for an out that was given away to charity, as a present, or "just because" rather than binned or UU
TA - for an out that was thrown away due to going off (generally as it has been lurking at the back of a stash since time immemorial) or for any other reason such as a broken container or spillage
PP - Project Pan: a list of specific items targeted to be used up

If anyone can think of any more we can add to the list so newbies won't be intimidated by our jargon!

    Graduates

Here is a list of our lovely, fragrant ladies who have polished and pampered their way through their products and managed to get their toiletries stash under control. Ladies - congratulations, you are an inspiration to the rest of us, xx . Thanks also to InaPickle who suggested we start the Graduate list. To join the list of graduates let us know by posting that you are graduating in big colourful letters, that way the OP can easily spot you and add you to the list, or better still - PM the OP as the thread can move really quickly! You may also wish to add how many products you have used up during the challenge. Good luck ladies! xx

Updated PP List and Finish 7 by Summer
    PP List:-

    Liz Earle Skin Repair
    Flora Mare eye cream
    OPI Original Nail Envy
    LUSH Dirty
    LUSH Mask of Magnaminty
    LUSH Cup o Coffee
    No 7 Nourishing cuticle cream
    ABC Skinwash
Liz Earle Rosemary and Lavender hand cream
    OPI IS Top coat

The Skin Repair tube has now been cut open and may be finished this week. I have to tip both the OPI Original Nail Envy and IS Top Coat bottles to get product onto the brush. The three LUSH products are all almost gone. I think the Mask will be finished on the next application. The cuticle cream tube is getting squishy. The amount of hand cream being pumped out is becoming inconsistent so hopefully this will be gone soon too. I've actually started using it as body lotion too.

    7 by Summer

    NARS Cruella
    MAC Whenever You Call eyeshadow
    No 7 Chilli lip lacquer
    NYX concealer
    OPI Apartment for Two mini
    Urban Decay Easy blush
    L'Occitane Jasmine & Bergamot fragrance

The only item above that is showing consistent usage is the concealer. I may have to start chipping away at the edges of the eyeshadow soon as my brush isn't picking up much product.

Will choose another OPI mini to replace this one as we still have a month of this challenge left.
Back for the No Buying Toiletries challenge. I pledge to only buy when I run out of a product that is not already in my stash no matter what wonderful emails land in in my Inbox or threads I read on MSE re: glitches!

The hand cream is finished. WDNBA although the two pumps I've had have both been gifts. Won't even use if I receive another as a gift. The fragrance is not great and sometimes the product flakes back off my skin.

I now only have the B&BW hand cream in use. Graduation !! My order for a back up and body lotion seems to have been waylaid in a warehouse somewhere. Fate?

Updates on this: I am now scraping concealer from around the outer sides of the tub so hopefully this will go this week. I've also crushed some of the eyeshadow away from the sides of the pan as I can't pick up product on my brush otherwise. I have swapped in a new OPI mini - Coca Cola Red. Another red!

More INs, this time from Feel Unique, I admit to buying a lot recently, I turn 40 on Sunday and I'm not exactly looking forward to it, plus we invited 14 people to my 'party' and only 3 are coming, 6 haven't even replied so to say I'm feeling low is an understatement.

I was also meant to be in London to meet up with my OH's uni mates but the woman organising it decided on a restaurant that serves exclusively spicy food (without consulting anyone) which I can't eat so I've effectively been excluded from that which has made me feel even worse.

    So here are the INs....

    INs

Lancôme Miracle CC Cushion 7g - Green 01 and Yellow 02, I've been wanting to try these for a while but they're only available at a few places and were always full price until now.

    Elemis Skin Buff 50ml
Elemis Lip Revive Conditioning Balm 7ml

Free gift when you buy 2 Elemis items
    Elemis Balancing Lavender Toner 50ml
Elemis Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix 15ml (excited to try this!)
    Elemis Pro-Radiance Cream Cleanser 30ml
Elemis Sea Lavender & Samphire Bath & Shower Milk 100ml
Elemis Sea Lavender & Samphire Body Cream 50ml

Feel Unique Free Gift when you spend £100

    I am on a roll!

    PP List:-

    Liz Earle Skin Repair
    Flora Mare eye cream
    OPI Original Nail Envy
    LUSH Dirty
    LUSH Mask of Magnaminty
    LUSH Cup o Coffee
    No 7 Nourishing cuticle cream
    ABC Skinwash
Liz Earle Rosemary and Lavender hand cream
    OPI IS Top coat

I also UU the Clairol ancient hair colour last night so whilst that was developing I used the last of the mask.

I've decided to ditch the top coat now. I'm getting good application on my left hand but not the right resulting in the lacquer looking pretty bad on that hand.

    Also UU:-

Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic and Liz EArle Cleanse & Polish. Both were full sizes and I have now have no back ups of either product. The last C&P lasted me two months so I'm going try and hold out until it's really needed to repurchase. The Tonic I decant into a spritzer bottle which makes it last ages and I intend to try and hold out until I have decanted the last part of the 200ml into the 30ml spritzer unless I see a really good deal for either product. Ie. if there is a TSV and anyone is selling them cheaply on QVCSell.

    I have an in

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 39ml - this is for me and DD. Have used it a couple of times so far and a little goes a long way. I didn't sucumb to the 'spend £30 for free postage' offer and just paid the £1.95 postage.

Also had to buy spf but I don't count that as it is for all the family and we only had one bottle.

This seemed to be causing the irritation on my cheeks, so I'm giving it to a family member who will make use of it.

Crabtree & Evelyn Nantucket Briar Shower Gel 500ml - super foamy and very strongly scented and the scent lingers on the skin as all C&E shower gels do, this was a powdery, old fashioned floral which I rather liked. Still have a couple of uses of the matching body lotion left then onto another of their matching sets.

Hugs to you kadison, sorry to hear that your friends are being a bit rubbish. The last 2 years I have gone away on holiday for my birthday, so buying more toiletries is probably cheaper lol

Had a few UU this week
Lush full size soap, it was blue but no idea of the name since I've been using it for a year!
Etude house bb cream samples, good samples and I got a whole week of use from them
Yardley daisy body spray, still got loads of the perfume left
BS Moringa body lotion, 60ml bottle I took on holiday, it was really runny so I have finished this and still have half of the shower gel left
BS coconut handcream, another small size I took on holiday

Had a good rummage around my makeup on Friday, safe to say I don't need to buy much for the next decade! I have left out a few things which have been well used and I need to try to finish up
No more buying unnecessary toiletries 2018

I forgot to declare one IN - Clarins Lip Oil (Tangerine). I kept delaying buying this as I wasn't sure if it was worth the hype and I regret now as it is an amazing product. Not sticky at all and looks great when you put on. I remember talking here with one of you, sorry can't remember who though After that, I decided to buy it at some point and it was discounted at duty-free so I bought one. I'm likely to buy other colors in the future.

Welcome back Treasurequeen. I have a UU-Liz Earle Instant Boost Skin Tonic. I do like this one and WBA at some point. I'm out of toners at the moment with the exception of Clinique Clarifying Toner and I only use it in the mornings. I need to purchase one.

I've also UU'd Bubble Purifying Charcoal Mask that I got in LF beauty box. This is a sheet mask which I didn't realise initially. You rub the sachet before opening for couple of seconds to activate the "bubbles" and then put on your face, leave around 10-15 min. Then you see bubbles foaming. After 15 min, you take it off and rinse with water. So it is almost like a glorified face wash. I don't like sheet masks that much and packaging/mask waste is an issue for me so I won't be buying this again.

I'm planning to paint my nails with Barry M - Bespoke today.

    UU - 5

Dove Go Fresh Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena Deodorant 250ml - This is my favourite Dove scent. WDBA. Have swapped for a roll on deodorant however it's a brand which leaves white marks on dark clothes so will probably buy another spray.

Nivea Soft Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream 200ml - I love this cream, bit of a HG for me. Plenty of other creams left in stash so will hold off on buying more for now.

    Johnson's Cotton Buds (200 buds)
    - I like using these to clean my ears but will seek out a less wasteful alternative.

Bomb Cosmetics Chilly Willy Bath Bomb
    - Another from the Christmas gift stash. According to Amazon, it lasts four baths but I've been using one per bath. Wouldn't usually buy bath bombs but they are lovely as gifts.

Imperial Leather Soap Bar - One of many I have stashed away but finally finished up this one!

    Updates and Ins
    PP List:-

Liz Earle Skin Repair - I think this will be finished tonight.
    Flora Mare eye cream
    OPI Original Nail Envy
    LUSH Dirty
    LUSH Mask of Magnaminty
    LUSH Cup o Coffee
    No 7 Nourishing cuticle cream
    ABC Skinwash
Liz Earle Rosemary and Lavender hand cream
    OPI IS Top coat

The LUSH Dirty will definitely be finished before the end of the month. The Nail Envy and cuticle cream may be. I doubt that the eye cream and skin wash will be.

    7 by Summer

    NARS Cruella
    MAC Whenever You Call eyeshadow
    No 7 Chilli lip lacquer
    NYX concealer
    OPI Apartment for Two mini
    Urban Decay Easy blush
    L'Occitane Jasmine & Bergamot fragrance

The NYX concealer was finished this morning. This was a lovely product that I'll repurchase once my next concealer (Benefit Boing) is done.

I really want to finish the eyeshadow this week and the fragrance.

    So Ins:-

    Cotton wool pads
2 x face masks (the L'Oreal copies) - thought I would try both the clarifying and the brightening as they are only £1.99 each.

Had to replace my lip balm. Was using a Burts Bees one but I had rolled all the product up to its end. It then got jammed into the lid and broke off so kept flying out of the tube when I used it. Have bought a tub of Carmex.

    Another UU
Bath & Body Works Be Amazing hand cream. Love this product but a bit miffed that I've gone through it so quickly. Have a new one to use next.
