Planning to change some hideous light fittings on my living room ceiling but also need to get the ceilings skimmed due to some delightful 80s fan decoration! What should I do first? Will light fittings have to come off for skimming anyway? Thanks

First fix the electrics, plaster, second fix electrics.

Two visits for the electrician unless it's a straight swap of the fitting and an electrician possibly isn't required anyway. If you're not confident then the above would still apply but without much 'fix', more remove and replace
