It's a traybake. Will sugar syrup hold it together as well as golden or will it be too runny and I should really just walk to Tesco?

Afaik sugar syrup is one part sugar to one part water. Mix a spoonful of each together to see for yourself what a dismal substitute it is. Unless you want to spend time reducing it on the hob to a 3-string consistency, using it will just waste your other ingredients.

A walk might do you some good.
