Sim Card for Aus / NZ 13th Mar 18 at 11:52 PM
    Hi all,

I will be travelling from the UK to Aus/NZ for 3 weeks next month and trying to work out best option for staying in touch with family back here. My current plan is with Vodafone but they charge upto 6/day for roaming, which I think is extortionate.

From what I have researched, it seems that I have 2 options:

    a) buy a Three payg SIM since they offer free roaming in both countries or

    b) opt for local sim or

    Thanks,
    FG

I'm with Three and I just use my UK sim. You will only need a local sim if you want to ring local numbers and not pay through the nose. Just pick up a PAYG pack at any supermarket. If you have a spare phone it can save hassle swapping sims over.

When we were in NZ we took an old unlocked phone and bought one of these when we landed at Christchurch Airport

    https://www.vodafone.co.nz/travel-sim/

If memory serves me right we got the $49 one.

Only thing is I am not sure if it would work in Australia- we didn't do Oz so didn't really apply.

For Aus, I have an Amaysim PAYG sim which is good for local calls. I knew I had no need to phone home whilst away so just swapped the sims over when I arrived in Aus.

Whenever I travel outside of Europe I will take an old mobile with me and pop a local SIM into it. It's useful to have some data for Google Maps and to be able to call your hotel in case of any problems. If the phone does get lost or stolen when out and about then it's no big loss.

I keep my main mobile in the hotel with my passport, backup plastic and other valuables. I just check the phone a couple of times a day in case of any emergency calls from home.

We got this https://www.vodafone.co.nz/travel-sim/ at Auckland airport. The $49 lasted us for the 12 nights we were there. I called the UK a fair bit, & was able to text stalk the family in NZ too.
    Thanks everyone!

    Hi All,

Thanks for the responses and very helpful tips. I have decided to take an old dual sim phone with a 3 sim and the other slot with Aus/NZ local sims. Will take my usual phone for any emergency calls etc

    Thanks again.

All hotels and most hostels have Wi-Fi. Plenty of opportunity to email/Skype/watsapp.

    Your gone 21 days.

If someone needs you in an emergency they will call your UK number and can explain. I'm sure cost isn't that important in an emergency.

Don't go to oz and nz and spend half your day needing to be connected to fb or watsapp. Or spent all day posting pictures. That can wait to your home. It's a wonderful area of the world. Don't miss it.
