Car tax paid by new ‘owner’ before V5 form sent

Car tax paid by new ‘owner’ before V5 form sent 10th Mar 18 at 12:55 AM
So my mother gave her old car to me. I paid the tax on it at the end of last year but she only did the V5 form a few weeks ago. I then sent that off to DVLA last week and got something back, which suggested I needed to pay the vehicle tax again.

A bit of Googling leads me to believe that is correct and I’ll have to pay for 12 months Road tax again? But that my mum will receive a refund in the form of a cheque for the last ten months of the year? Is there no pro rata vehicle tax, I.e. paying for the last ten months only? Any idea if this situation can be resolved in my favour (given I did tax it initially).

I don't think you have lost anything you should not have done.
There will be one month where both your Mum's ownership and your new ownership pay tax but that is always the case whenever a car is sold.
You just need your Mum to give you her 10 mth refund.

When you paid the tax did you use the reference on the new keepers section or did you use the reminder that your Mum received through the post?

If you used the new keepers section then you'll be ok, if not then your mum will receive a refund and you'll need to pay the tax again. Have you checked the tax status on the dvla website? Best you do this asap incase you're using an untaxed vehicle.

What form did you tax the vehicle? The new keeper supplement green slip, r the big V5 or the reminder?

What date is our down when you had the vehicle from?

    Also check https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

Yeh, we used my Mum!!!8217;s reminder. Gov website seems to say untaxed!
Should the cost now be ten months!!!8217; worth? It!!!8217;s asking for Ł190 again but that is what it cost back in December for the whole year.

Edit: Actually gov website says taxed up until Jan 30. That might explain the Ł190 thing. I only got them to bother with the V5 form (I personally wasn!!!8217;t aware of them) when I was sorting out insurance for the first time. Now I recall, they put the transfer date as Jan 30 as it!!!8217;s my birthday. My parents then sent me a form which they told me to sign and send to DVLA. I guess as soon as DVLA got that form they deemed it was untaxed.

Thanks a lot folks! Phoned DVLA, eventually managed to get through to a human and paid for Jan and Feb this year. Phew.
I wonder if they would have ever realised / done anything about it? This can!!!8217;t be that uncommon a situation? Maybe people aren!!!8217;t as ignorant as me in the first place...
