    S7 v S8 v S9

    S7 v S8 v S9 9th Mar 18 at 8:19 AM
I am trying to decide, which one of these models to buy. My options are:

    S7 (refurbished): 296.99
    S8: 600 (Includes 24 month contract)
    S9: 700

I have saved up and I can afford an S9, however I am trying to justify the extra cost to myself. I am a Software Developer, so naturally want to learn more about the new technology.

I would be interested to hear from others who have any of these models or who have recently upgraded to one of these models or even from one of these models and to one of these models.

Appears to be Samsung phones. S7 was the first phone I pretty much kept for nearly 2 years after swapping each year from the S2 upwards. Was very happy with it and only swapped due to my wife buying me a S8 for Christmas which I put on oreo. Same again with the S8 honestly not in any rush to get a S9 now, phone just works how I need it to and can't see any reason to rush out and upgrade. You should be able to get a S8 a lot cheaper though if you grab one when under offer they're closer to 420/450 and will probably drop a little more after the s9 comes out they may drop just under 400.

To answer the OP question I'd suggest a alternate approach. Haveing been in mobile web development for a decade, I know two things:
    1. Software developmers always want to test thier code on the latest high spec. phones, and ensure it works flawlessly. But ...
    2. The vast majority of folks out there in the real world are using low end phones, or mid/highrange handdowns a couple of years old.
    The two aren't compatible..

So to truely learn mobile tech:
    1. Buy the Samsung S7 and reset to default factor spec, intsall the minimum needed and use for web dev. Doesn't matter if you balls it up in dev mode, and you can quickly reset, and ...
    2. Buy a cheap handset to use day to day, with as near vanilla Oreo as you can get. Moto G5, or Nokia are good bets. Use it day to day, so you know current tech, and lower spec hardware limitations.

Doing this you have spent lot less than the S8/9 cost. Know both the latest, and most common tech. Plus you will always have a reliable usable phone.

PS I use a Nokia 5 day to day, and its "fine". Bit slow granted, but its thin, all metal, and looks like a much more high end phone. i.e I'm not embarased by it.

Thinking about it a little more, for fuller coverage consider:
    1. Samsung S7 - Hand-me-down high end, from the most common manufacturer, with the Samsung bloatware on it
    2. Nokia 2/3/5 - New Low end, pure Oreo no bloat.
    3. Xiaomi Redmi 4X/5 - Recent AOSP low end (googleless plus Chinese bloat), the most common type of phone on the planet.

All for under the price of the S8.

But then of course you also need to consider iOS ...

I'd go for the s9 if I were you. The price difference of s8 and s9 are not that much and yet there are significant changes really good about the s9.

Go for the S7. S8 adds the fingerprint scanner and facial recognition, but my S8 generally stays unlocked when near by (Gear S3) watch. I would certainly pay 100 more for an S9 than an S8, seems better value, but they really don't add anything fundamental.

just on ios, i had apple for years but i don't like the control they had over my phone, they tell me what apps i can install, they shut my phone down for updates and then several more updates have to be done to rectify all the bugs in the first update etc etc etc

Nope, 12 months going on the last few 'S' launches. You won't get an S10 at Christmas 2018. You'll have to wait for an 'Easter Present'.

Unless you are some kind of roving graphic designer that for some reasons needs a phone that has as much power as a powerful laptop did a few years ago but on a tiny unusable touch screen, the refurbed S7 is just within moneysaving territory. The battery would likely be knackered by now though.

The prices of the other two are absurd for looking at pictures of cats on Facebook, Instagramming your dinner, and occasionally sending angry tweets to Southern Rail.

A Motorola or Huawei is perfectly fine for you and when it!!!8217;s in a case no one will know.
