So after a couple of years burying my head in the sand thinking it would all be OK in the end i have come to realise i need to get it together and man up. After managing to rack up just over £18k of debt with many a silly decisions mainly me and my wife thinking we could afford to rent a house that was well out of our budget we have moved back to mum and dads and i have now added it all up contacted all the relevant companies and will begin the path to being debt free. Debts can be seen in my signature. my target is debt free by august next year and i believe that is more than achievable . just thought id share my journey with all you lovely people

Thanks Kitten & congrats on the 25% paid. main thing thats motivating me is just seeing those numbers go down i was tempted by a savings pot for moving out but i want to be 100% free of debt before i do so figured the sooner there gone the sooner i can start to save. Once all gone i should be able to put away £1200 a month towards the moving out fund not including a hopefully substantial pay rise that im hoping for next month. I am tempted to start getting rid of some stuff but there isn't really that much i have to get rid of other then a 50 inch TV but they seem to only sell for around £75-£100 so might just keep it till we're back in our own place.

You have kids. There is always stuff with kids. I'm sure there's stuff to sell. Unless you're really good at keeping on top of it. I realise your situation is different living with family so you probably already got rid of it but you'd be amazed at what you can sell. I cannot keep on top of stuff here. 3 huge bags to charity yesterday and I'm still struggling to see floor. There's a brilliant thread on here about mad stuff people sell on eBay. Like old perfume bottles.
Im like you and have to murder debt first, savings later. But I'm starting to think savings are more important. I don't know. It's very hard to unlearn the credit life xxx

We have loads of kids stuff but we've made a deal that any of there stuff that they sell they get the money to spend on other stuff of there choosing or to save (there better at saving then i am) i think once i get down to the 4 big creditors im going to relook at putting abit aside each month and go from there

What a refreshing post. Massive respect to you for growing a pair, facing up to the task at hand and going about it with so much gusto! Lowell, BW Legal. quickquid, yep, all familiar been there done that but thankfully paid most of them off, £956 left to clear with Cabot which I should be able to do in next 3 months.

My issue is saving for deposit for mortgage, and as you are waiting for payday to take a chunk out of your outstanding balance, im waiting to deposit some money into my savings pot. Principal is same, need patience, and before you know it you will be debt free and saving too.

I have found writing down a plan month by month helped me, it might be Aug next year before me and the wife can save enough, but knowing there is an end date, a goal, brings hope and focus. Keep up with the hard work and keep up with the updates!

Huge congrats on that GMAC i cant wait to see my figure get into 4 figures let alone 3. the writing a plan is a great idea and really does help make the finish line seem that little bit closer. the toughest part is trying to throw everything i can at it but also still allowing myself a little bit of fun e.g activities at the weekends with the kids etc. but so far all is going well and we have a week away at butlins next month to look forward to which all food etc is already paid for in full thanks to gifts from the wedding.

Happy Monday everyone hope all are ok.
Not a bad day here just shy of my targer on 16.4k remaining but only by £18 and just waiting for everything to leave my account before overpaying anything else but pretty sure i should still have around £150 to play with.
Honestly cant believe ive paid off 2k already still disgusted i ever let it get that bad but making ammends now and it will not happen again. Just worked out a percentage and currently sitting at 10.66%paid which im quite chuffed with. Pretty much a no spend weekend for me other then a couple of essentials and a £1 washing up bowl to build a little pond with the kids in the garden. Roll on tomorrow so i can cross that 2k threshold

    Hi everyone :)
Hi everyone, I've just joined the forum and I'm looking for some good debt management tips. I want to be able to manage my expenses so that I don't go into overdraft and pile up a huge debt.

Silver I'd suggest you start by starting your own thread and posting about your situation and what you're trying to achieve. Then fill in a SOA (statement of affairs) to show your incomings and outgoings in details (if you start your own thread someone will be along quickly to give you a link for one). This way people will be able to suggest where you could save money and where best to start.

Hi Guys and thanks for the continued support. Been a quiet couple of weeks for me not much spent but not much paid either. managed to pay a extra £10 off of the SSE debt yesterday courtesy of swagbucks so thats now down to £420 and will be gone completely come pay day . had a conference in oxford yesterday lunch provided and mileage paid for by work leaving me with about £25-£30 extra once i put the fuel in so that will be going towards something most likely SSE. Almost the weekend and looking forward to spending some time getting the garden sorted with the small people.

hope every one is well and has a great weekend

    Hi Hysteria,

Just came across your diary and wanted to offer my congrats on your fantastic achievement to date.

I came across MSE less than a month ago and from reading some of the diaries, I was inspired to do exactly what you have been doing and start paying off the bills, which have been accumulating for a good number of years. I guess you could say I had my LBM!

Started off with just under €29k (currently based in London till the summer but debts are in Ireland) and between raiding a few small savings accounts and cashing out some stocks that weren't doing as well as I hoped, I've managed to get it down to just over €22k. I'm hoping this will be down to just under €21k by the end of the month.

My DFD is currently August 2019 but who knows, maybe that will change. Really feeling the need to get on the property ladder, which is what made me come online looking for advice / support / encouragement. Rest assured that you are not in the boat alone, as I have found out from this site. It really is amazing what a little bit of motivation can do.

Keep up the good work. I've subscribed to your diary so looking forward to seeing your progress over the coming months.

    Scooby

productive few days for me got a ton of stuff listed on ebay and also cleared another £20 Off of sse this morning making that a nice round £400 owed which will be gone completely come Wednesday also had a job interview today which went quite well so optimistic on that as it would also increase my income by around 12k a year which would be huge for me. should hopefully hear back from them early next week.
couple of days in the garden planned for the weekend to make the most of this beautiful weather.

    hope everyone is well
