Please Help! Tax credits and universal credits 8th Jan 18 at 7:24 PM
I carried out a benefits checklis on MSE and even though I was getting child tax credits it said I could apply for Universal credits too. I did this and was told I didn't qualify for Universal credits. However, because I applied for universal credits my child tax credits stopped. When I phoned up I was told that I cannot reapply for child tax credits and on top of that I have to repay 489,97 iin overpaid child tax credits.
I was looking for help to manage on a limited income but have ended up even worse off. Is there anything I can do. I am desparate

I'm sorry to say that once on UC you cannot go back to legacy benefits (such as Tax Credits).

I don't think there is much you can do.

Does the TC overpayment relate to a period in which you had claimed UC but were still receiving TC's?
