Time to mend and make do, beg, borrow and barter. 22nd Dec 17 at 11:01 AM
    Hello lovely MSE angels.

I've been around for a while and know the small MSE ways lead to big changes in lifestyle. I'm so lucky I found you all when I did way back in the beginning of time!

I had started a new 'adventure' diary but this years events have shifted the focus from those for now to a bit more of a 'primal' focus on living very frugally, to accommodate unexpected and unavoidable shifts in expenses for the foreseeable.

As today is 'housekeeping budget day' I figured its a good a day as any to start this month afresh and try and move my mindset.

I have a fair bit of debt still but the main issues for me are pesky over drafts and a credit card which crept up whilst I was otherwise occupied. Its in the signature below.

This diary is to focus and hone my rusty MSE skills to the front and really live with what we have, make do with what we can, borrow or beg favours where needed, and barter ourselves where we can, there's no shame in asking for help once in a while!

We've two in our household both working f/t, plus two grown up flown the coup for now younglings - off adventuring (uni and gap year type shennanigans), a lovely DH, two pesky mutts (one quite unexpectedly terminally poorly) and a severe lack of chickens in our lives right now. Must sort that in the new year. My mother is quite poorly with an unexpected, terminal diagnosis, so I'm looking to juggle my very accommodating job with helping with her care and treatment.

We live well, but we could live a whole lot better with less, and support others more in the process.

Paid 150 over to the cc for spends over weekend.

Car is in garage update does not look good.

First aid training tomorrow - free lunch and lift.

DH finished his MSc so had tea out - although we were both knackered.

Starting to get head back into work today.

Oooh in most exciting news - an ice cream machine arrived home as a part of the birthday celebrations - the plug in and go type, come back here's the icecream - man oh man. I made elderflower sorbet using last years cordial stash.

    OH MY.

One litre of lush sorbet for the price of half a bag of sugar and a lemon.

Next up plum, rhubarb, or bramble sorbets as have stashes of these HM cordials in the cupboard.

    Oh dear I've been a bit awol haven't I.

    Sorry about that.

My boss left and it was all just a bit crazy frantic.

It would appear I'm now the new gardener in residence........ I accepted an internal promotion and a wee payrise .

Also had folks visiting, graduation for himself and much happening with parentals.

But, I'm alive and so need to check those banks.

Dusts off the kettle..........I hope you're all well.

Some stock brewing on the stove.

Hello! Great to 'see' you back - and congrats on the internal promotion and pay rise, that's fabtastic! Can't believe you're not allowed wellies though!

    Congrats to Mr stripes too.

    Hope parentals are OK.

Has summer reached you there? Feels like full-blown summer here.

We were asked to join our village charity 'open gardens day' and it seemed mean to refuse, but now I'm regretting it - every time I go outside I just see more weeds or empty spaces or flowers that are already over or shrubs that seriously need pruning, and I'm imagining visitors will wonder why I offered to open! Could do with your expertise round here!

Hey up folks how kind you all are indeed!

Graduation was himself - next one is DD. Then I think we're done with these. clever clogs they all are indeed.

Work is crazy we are one team member down - but its grand we'll get there. New to us all this change of team stuff so we are growing together.

Trog you sound worn out! Advice would be do what you can and put a wee sign up about 'wildlife gardening' - gardens shouldn't be too tidy its really very bad for the environment and the surrounding bugs. And, weeds are just native diversity.

If I could come and virtually weed for you I would.

Starnac - how kind and thank you I'll pass that on. As for no wellies - well I can wear steel toe cap wellies but my oh my - they are like trying to walk on the moon. Hope you and yours are well.

Beanie he did look good in his kilt, they always do eh. I hope you're well!

Gien I'm envious of the sweetpeas - ours are still thinking about going up the stakes.......... hope your lands are grand.

Rt - I'm making icecream with maple syrup is that allowed? And I hope you're utterly splendid.

US - bring it! We had a lovely MSE pop in from a couple a week ago, how lovely that was to put names to faces. I'm sure your pooch would make dog of the day at work.......

GP me dear I hope your resplendent, is that wee sprakle off to school yet :P the time goes very fast. DD graduation in two weeks.

    The time indeed does fly.

Aside working I have nothing much to report - home made grub is delish and the spends are minimal. Find out on Friday if the payrise went through.......

I see the elderflowers are starting here - so time for some mega cordial production I think.

Glad you are having fun in life - despite the workload.

Am curious - have seen an ariel photo - is there anyway to get to the beach from the garden other than across the golf course? And is the golf course part of the estate, or a more famous one?

I now have visions of Mr Ben as a 'deep sea diver' at the thought of lumbering about in steel toe-cap wellies Am showing me age too

    Have a great evening
