Rent a Room and Housing Benefits 3rd Dec 17 at 11:00 AM
    Hello,
I own my home and it's mortgaged. I'm thinking about taking in a lodger and renting a room in my house.
The question a potential lodger would like to know is can he claim housing benefits on the rental he pays me?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Better off asking on the benefits board.

My common-sense but ill-informed answer would be 'why not?'

Thank you for your response. I understand that under the Rent A Room Scheme, £7500 is tax free. Does that mean it is also disregarded income for tax credits?

    are you asking about

    * a landlord claiming benefits whilst in receipt of rent, or

    * a lodger claiming benefits while paying rent ?

If you google 'does income from rent affect tax credits' you will find

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tax-credits-working-out-income

    Under 'other income' it says

    Property income
Include income from property in the UK that you own or rent.

    Donít include:

income from the Rent a Room scheme
property income included in your self-employed income

    But its probably worth checking.

    Remember google is your friend

Bear in mind that Housing Benefit is being phased out in favour of Universal Credit. I am not close enough to the matter to be able to say where and when this may affect different areas of the UK, or what the impact might be on (I assume) your lodger.
Agree with others, you may get a better informed response about Benefits from folks over on the Benefits board. Best of luck.
