    Financial Freedom + Self Care

Financial Freedom + Self Care 25th Nov 17 at 1:03 PM
    Hello everyone,

I want to pay off my debt and move forward with my life. I am a young woman with no children and I am capable of addressing this, I can change things for the better now.

I thought I'd seek support and encouragement here as this whole process can be so stressful. And although a lot of people are in debt, it is a taboo subject, no one talks about it. I will be logging my progress here at least once a week. I plan to complete Dave Ramseys Baby Steps 1 and 2 by the end of 2018.

Baby Step 1 Save 1K Emergency Fund.
Baby Step 2 Pay off debts smallest to largest.

At the moment I am temping at a University as an Administrator until mid February 2016 - while looking for a permanent role or contract role (12 months+). I would like to be self employed as a Project Management Officer and retrained late last year in order to do this work. The market is slow at the moment, and I have been approached about roles but have not secured anything yet. I can make my company dormant for a year or two while I work at a permanent/contract role and pay off the debt.

I am an Artist at heart but pursuing my creativity is part of the reason that I am in debt now so I'd like to earn more money and perhaps find time (either weekends or holidays) when I can do something creative just for myself. Once I have paid off the debt my mind will be clearer. I also considered starting a small side-business this year selling hair care products as I make them for myself but I just feel so stressed by this debt, it is hard to think about anything else.

It is hard to not obsess about the debt and the stress has affected my sleep. I have slept 4 hours a night each night over the past two weeks. I bought some herbal sleeping pills and will do more to calm myself down and practice self-care:
Aromatherapy - I already have oils have and know how to blend oils so this will not cost me anything.
Meditation - Free and there is a Buddhist Centre near work that I can go to as well as a Chapel I can visit to relax and be still.
Walks - I can walk at lunch time and part of the way home to begin with, 30 mins a day does not feel like much but it is a start.
Swimming - I can swim for free on weekends within my local area.

I find myself regretting so many decisions that I have made. I could have saved so much money while I lived at home and made better decisions. I worked so hard and did not save, instead I got into debt. I did not feel like I could tell anyone for ages or get any help and I have felt so stuck, defeated and alone.

My sister is the only one who knows about the debt and I do not want to stress her out or to burden her with what I am feeling. I do not feel like I can tell any friends or other relatives. Also I have not seen my friends for ages and felt so isolated at my previous workplace that I really need to socialise - for free. I will be volunteering at a local homeless shelter today.

In five years my aim is to work as a Business Analyst. I am studying for a Business Analysis qualification and will save up for the exam as soon as I can afford to. I have the textbook and reading it is free so I think that is the best thing for me to do right now, simply study at home.

I am budgeting and watching every penny. As I am working as a temp, I am getting paid per hour and receive money weekly. So I have weekly and monthly budgets as my hours can vary slightly.

    Week One Summary
Task: Use my Debit Card only.

I have had to use CC 1 for travel and food over the past few weeks as I was waiting to get paid, through my Debit account. As I got paid yesterday I can now switch to my Debit Card and move forward using that one card. This will stabilise the debts on the other cards moving forward.

    Debts
    Credit Card 1 6,000/5,944.34
Debit Card 2 5,000/4,899.63 (Using this account to pay bills so it will fluctuate)
    Credit Card 2 1,200/1,186.48
Accountancy Bill 144 (Last Payment in December)
    Tax Bill 750 (Monthly instalments December 2017 !!!8211; May 2018 / 150 per month)
    Library fines 90
Donation for a group art project I have decided not to do 15
    Total 13,029

    Week Two Goal
Put 200 in Energy Fund - Unexpected expenses can arise so my aim is to set aside 200 for an Emergency Fund. I am temping so I want to set aside a 1 month Emergency Fund of 1K by January just incase something happens with this contract. Then I will move to Baby Step 2 and pay off the remaining debts from smallest to largest.

    Week Two Budget
    Earnings 458.28
    Bills Broadband 18.99
    Credit Card 1 Payment 150
    Travel 15
    Food 15
    Total: 259.29

I am not going out, socialising or doing anything fun that is not free of charge. Hopefully I can go to a free art exhibition or something like that sometime soon. The stress I have been feeling has been so draining. The University has a free telephone counselling service, I called last week and spoke to someone lovely. I will try to call again more regularly. My minimum payments and bills are being met and now I will have some additional money to fund Baby Step 1.

I do not drink alcohol or smoke so that is not an issue, as Dave says I am eating Rice and Beans, Beans and Rice until this is taken care of.

Thanks for reading and all the best with your debt-free journeys.

    Gym

I went to the Gym today. I'd booked an aerobics class but I worked later than expected so I had to cancel that class last minute. The trainer Ade invited me to a Padwork session he was doing later on so I went to that instead. There were two of us in the class, it was a mix of light boxing and martial arts - for beginners. The other attendee, Yvette, was really nice and has more experience/skill than me so it was good to try something new.

I've decided to just do my best in classes and build up from there.

The hotel I'm staying in has a gym so I'll look at any classes they have. They have a swimming pool too.

It's an honour just to be nominated...
I recieved an email from the temp agency I work for informing me that I had been nominated as temp of the quarter, every quarter temps are nominated, whoever wins is featured in the company newsletters and get a prize, I think it's usually wine and chocolates. My Line Manager (who left two weeks ago) nominated me and I was touched. It was totally unexpected and sweet of her to take the time to do so.

My self esteem has been really low lately and I'm trying to pick it up.

I had a work Away day today. Afterwards there was a work leaving do tonight in three parts, bowling, pizza and karaoke. I just went for the bowling, this lack of sleep and the list of work-related tasks as well as travel-related tasks I have to do is too long, I also wanted to walk part of the way home tonight. The weather has improved so walking regularly will be easier.

    Hey everyone,

It's been a while, way too long. I hope your DFW journey's are going well. I'm going back to the UAE soon, I've been organising an event and it's going to happen this week.

I haven't been as diligent about checking my bank account so I want to do that regularly again. I also need to sort out my expenses from the last trip.

    Purchases?

60 I had some family photos scanned and want to get some blown up so I can decorate my home and make it more...homely.

55 Smart Ankle Boots and Shoes for work, Clarks had a sale, 60& off.

I'm going to catch up with a friend on Saturday, looking forward to seeing her.

My sister's home purchases is moving forward, it looks like she'll move out in June.

I know that I just need to focus much more on what I want to do moving forward and to be positive about things again.

Bless you all, your support has been awesome and I appreciate it so much.

I'm still waiting for my expenses to be repaid so I've held off posting a new signature. Once they've been repaid I will.

I am pleased to say that my debt has reduced, it's now 8963.35

    New Signature details:
    2582.84 Debit + 833.86 CC2 + 5546.65 CC1
    Total 13,199/8963.35

    Total repaid: 4235.65

I'm surprised that I've paid off that amount, but I'm doing something right. Thanks to all of you for your support and kind words.

    Hi everyone,

I hope that you're all well. And enjoying the summer sun.

    New Signature details:
    2527.92 Debit + 900 CC2 + 5,396.65 CC1
    Total 13,199/8824.57

I have 8824.57 left to pay off. If I continue to make what I'm currently making, I'll be able to pay off each card as follows:

900 CC2 - June 2018 (I'm tempted to just keep paying off my Debit card)
    2527.92 Debit - December 2018
    5,396.65 CC1 - August 2019

My contract has been extended to December.

I've been battling with feeling down and bad about myself, my choices, so many thoughts have come to mind but I'm working on improving that.

I've listened to some self help talks and interviews lately, it's something that I used to do all the time, it's been uplifting.

Thank you all so much for your support.

    Hi everyone,

It's been a while and I look forward to posting more regularly again. I've missed your lovely comments and encouragement. And I wish you all the best in your debt free journeys.

I have paid off Credit Card 2!

I aim to pay off the Debit Card by December 2018 and Credit Card 1 by August 2019.

My sister moved into her new place yesterday. I'm happy for her. Now that it's happened I feel less stressed, I'm not anticipating it anymore. And I can just focus on sorting out my finances, clearing this debt and saving money.

I've been thinking about personal finance a lot lately, I'd like to talk to people who know more about it than I do so I can learn more and make future plans. I'm using this time to make a big shift in how I manage my finances. I recieved a WhatsApp message from one of my cousin's friends yesterday, Angela, I met her at my cousin's house warming weeks ago and we got talking about many things including personal finance. It was a great conversation. We'll have drinks soon. She's forming a personal finance education group for women.

I'm taking Monday off so I think I'll clear up my home as I'm working from home today and will be away at a family event this weekend. I've purchased some plants and two second hand chairs to complete the set of dining chairs I have. They need to be mended and reupholstered, so I have materials coming.

I called the Samaritans today. I haven't spoken to anyone about anything I'm feeling in weeks. I cried, it felt good because it was a release. I haven't really had one, no regular creative outlets, I haven't been writing down my emotions or journalling, I haven't been taking regular walks, haven't been to the gym in weeks.

I've done random creative things like taking photos at family events but nothing regular.

Self Care is the main theme for this thread and I need to do more of that, so I can share more positive things with you all.

Apart from Self Care, I'd like to make some short films. I can't spend any money on them but I do have a camera, so I'm looking into how to do it for free. Wish me luck.

    Hey everyone,

    Self Care

Spending time with positive people & CPD
I called a friend, Remi, earlier this week. I haven't seen him in months and it was good to catch up. He's working on his businesses, he'll be opening a restaurant this year and he's very positive, kind and helpful. He's dealing with a lot of challenges, opening a business isn't easy but he's doing it and I was pleased to hear about his progress. I think asking for and accepting help is something that is challenging for me to do, it so much easier for me to be giving. And he is someone who always asks how he can help. I think that being giving is a special quality and I think it is a great thing for me to learn how to accept help too.

I also went to a Project Management training course at the Uni, I've done several since I started as my Line Manager(s) have been happy for me to attend any relevant courses. I had a long chat with the trainer, Issac, we arranged to meet a few months ago as he taught some other workshops I attended, included a workshop in the UAE, while I was working in that office. It is so cool that he took the time to talk with me. The conversation was very helpful and encouraging. He's worked as a Project Manager as an employee and on a self-employed basis for over 20 years, he focusses on consultancy work these days. Glad that I had that conversation.

    Taking it easy and decorating
I was on annual leave on Monday, offsick on Tuesday and I was at a training workshop on Thursday so I am working late tonight to get back up to speed with work. And taking it easy this weekend.
I was supposed to meet with Angela tonight and my friend Tiwa tomorrow but I cancelled both. I'm exhausted, still having trouble sleeping and I want to clean and put some photos and images on the walls this weekend, to make my home cosier. I'll catch up with my friends next weekend. I do not take anyone for granted I just need to take things easy.

    Like minded creative people
I've booked tickets for two events for creative people next week and I'd like to spend more time with other supportive creative people. And these events will be a great opportunity to do so.

Creativity for free: Filmmaking & Youtube
I also want to learn more about making short films, I have found an excellent Youtube channel run by an indie filmmaker so I can start doing some exercises this week with my camera, for free.

New signature l will update my signature once a month moving forward, it is a lot easier and makes more sense and It will be easier for me to track my progress.

Credit Card 1 6,000/5,322.56 Debit Card 5,000/2975.3 Credit Card 2 1200/0 Tax Bill 750/0 Library Fine 90/0 Accountancy Bill 720/0 Cancelled Art Project Donation 15/0

I'm on baby step 2, working on paying off my Debit Card this year, by December 2018. Then I'll work on paying off Credit Card 2 by August 2019.

    Walking
I walked for almost an hour last night, from the training workshop towards home. It felt great, I think I will leave a pair of heels at work and wear trainers to and from work so I can walk a lot more, especially during the summer. The weather has been lovely, long may it last.

    Other Things
I know there are other things I need to do, drink more water, walk regularly, Aromatherapy, swim and socialise more. In time I will.

As always, thanks for following my journey lovely people. I wish you all well with you DFW journeys.

    Second nomination...
I recieved an email from the temp agency I work for informing me that I had been nominated as temp of the quarter again. I didn't win but it was a sweet surprise. My Manager took time to right a lengthy and lovely recommendation. The office can be quiet and lonely as the team doesn't have great moral and we're split across different offices but she's been a joy to work with.
