State Pension Forecast Pre 2016 NI top up. 15th Nov 17 at 10:20 AM
I am helping a friend with their state pension forecast. They have been retired for some years and will have no employment before their SP retirement date.

I believe they can top up their pension to the full 159.55 pw with 8 missing NI years. These years are pre 2016 so I would like to make sure they will all count.

The forecast detail is as follows:-
    • Never contracted out and no COPE amount shown
    • 27 yr NI contributions.
    • Date payable May 2019
    • Pension to April 2017 123.08 ( so exactly 27/35*159.55)
    • If contribute to April 2019 132.20 ( so extra 2 yrs at 4.56 pw)
    • The most increase 159.55 ( so pay 8 yrs NI )

I would like to suggest my friend pay the missing 8 years 2006 to 2013 because these are the cheapest years to pay but do we need to phone HMRC to double check this will be the case?

I understand NI prices are fixed until 2019 so my friend could put off the payment until say late 2018 if they wanted to, is that correct?

Looks like a quite straightforward case of buying the cheaper pre 2016 years then. Yes those pre 2016 prices will stay the same until April 2019 and will then rise to the current year price (until 2023 ?) so leaving it until late 2018 / early 2019 seems sensible, MrsM will be doing the same.

My friend wrote to the NI Office asking them specifically to confirm that paying 2006-2013 NI would add to her state pension.

After a month they replied listing the amount each year would cost, which she already knew but adding that before making the payments she should check whether they would add to her state pension.

You could not make it up! Do they not employ people who can read any more?

Your friend should call the Future Pension Centre. Give them your NI number and they will let you know how many pre 2016 years will count. They will then tell you to pay the cheapest ones : )

Thank you Debbie, she will do that. She was hoping to have confirmation in writing but it seems that's not on offer.

I called them myself last week. Found them very helpful and gave advice on both pre and post 2016 contributions.

I don't know why they can't include this information when you look at your forecast online.

Hope she finds them as useful as I did

Can you really top up years as far back as 2006? I thought you could only top up the last 6 years, have I got that wrong?
