Home insurance - home based business and stock 6th Oct 17 at 2:04 PM
    Hi All

Can anyone recommend a competitive home insurer or specialist broker/underwriter that can offer home insurance where you have a home run business with stock kept on the premises? My wife runs a business from home and although the stock doesn't need to be covered by the home insurance policy, every year when we renew we struggle to find competitive quotes because many underwriters have a blanket "maximum of £5k stock kept on the premises" rule even when they don't even cover that stock anyway. Presumably they see this as a theft risk which could lead to a wider claim for a break-in but in our case although worth more than £5k, the stock is stored in the loft so out of sight, it's quite bulky and isn't something that a thief would find desirable (fabric) so we just need an underwriter who will assess the actual risk rather than just base it on it's value being above their threshold.

We're currently insured with Direct Line who are aware and happy to insure us in the circumstances and they add about £50 to the premium, but their home insurance in general seems to be about £150 more than other like for like cover based on website quotes so I'm fairly sure we could get a lower quote from elsewhere if we could find others that were flexible on the stock issue. Any ideas?

Home insurance doesn't really cover business stock, I think you'll struggle to find one that will. I'm sure the Direct Line home insurance policy doesn't cover the stock.

The business section of cover would usually only apply to desktop computers / printers etc.
