I hear so many horror stories about car hire firms,

Is it best to book and pay for it now, or will it be the same price to do it when we get there?

We did from Newark Airport. Nbooked in advance as we always do when travelling to the USA.

Usual attempts at up-selling, of course.

Got to agree with Polly, always best to book in advance. I can not see you getting a better deal on location. Don't be fooled by US base rates as many Americans have hire car insurance on their own car insurance policy.
