Taking it slowly, but doing it well. 13th Jul 17 at 7:39 PM
    Good evening all,

I'm rejoining this thread and you lovely people after a break of a few years.

I've got a new user name, but only because I can't get back into my old account. (My old diary was called 'Today is not a NSD'

I've kept the start of my username the same, so it's still a big wave hello from me, Wish.

A quick (I promise) update from me.

I'm about to turn 35 (still wish I was 25)

I now have a 1 year old little boy - Pickle

I'm currently on extended maternity leave/career break/unemployed (I took the statutory maternity pay from my high pressured, long hours, no social life job, handed my notice in whilst on mat leave and , because I didn't take any occupational maternity pay, I didn't have to repay any money. )

Husband is still a freelance audio visual engineer in the entertainments industry

Still in our 2 bed Victorian terrace, which we still love.

We still want to be mortgage free, but it's going to take a little longer than we thought when I was last here.

    So, why am I back?
I need some motivation and some accountability, need to get back on the no spend days. Need to curb some bad financial habits that have crept back in.
Need to lose some weight - nsd will help by no cake shop stops or treats from the discount supermarket at the end of the road.

I'm at the end of my maternity savings.

When I found out I was pregnant I stopped overpaying the mortgage and diverted all that cash into a maternity leave 'fund' to that I added my statutory maternity pay as it came in, 5k from an inheritance and a 5k gift from my parents.
The total of those savings have allowed us to live as we were for 15.5 months without hubby having to contribute anymore to our household expenses than he had previously.

I am very pleased with what we have achieved. But, that 'half month' is August and then the money is gone, I have no income and we will have to manage on hubby's self employment earnings.

I am meant to be applying for agency work, in my field, for 3 days a week from September. It's not happened yet due to hubby being run off his feet with work. I'm not worried about this, I will sort it when I can.

We have no debts, other than our mortgage (which currently stands at just less than 37k and has 12years 3 months left to run)

We receive child benefit, but nothing else (previous warnings have been too high to receive tax credits or anything else)
We have no family living nearby, so will need to pay out for childcare come September for 3 days a week, as I'll be agency and hubby is self employed we can't get childcare vouchers, but should be able to open one of the new tax free childcare accounts saving us 20% on childcare costs, which will be around 120 a week.

This is what I already do:

YNAB all my accounts - this is how I've managed to have 15 months off work
Use ynab to save for all annual bills, overpaying each section so I have a little bonus when it comes to paying the bill

Meal plan & cook from scratch

Try not to spend too much on things for Pickle, and try to sell on things he has finished with (this has had mixed success)

I'd love to have your support as I attempt to pay off the mortge earlier than planned. I'm aiming, from August, to overpay the same amount as the interest added to the account. This isn't much, but it's a realistic challenge given out current circumstances.

    Thank you for reading

    Wish.

    Hi Wish
I've heard a few people talk about colouring in MF bricks - how does this work? It sounds like a really good motivational tool

As I pay off 400 of the mortgage I colour in a brick (starting at the end) as I save 400 in the offset pot I put a cross through a brick (I started at 0 for these) I'm around 40% complete now, 25% reduces mortgage balance and the rest held in cash in my accounts.

    Hope this helps.

Oh look, I've done it again. Another nsd!! Good job I'm doing well this end of the month and with trips away starting on Wednesday and lasting pretty much the rest of the month, I don't suppose there will be many more.
I worked this morning, I need to do a bit this evening to give me a head start for tomorrow, but other than that all is well in the world of work. Packing for going away on Wednesday and the tidiness of the house are a complete other matter. I'd like to have another declutter blitz of a few rooms, but that isn't going to happen until at least November now.
I did ring the mortgage company today to check my actual overpayment amounts, I have got a little bit left so I will aim to pay up to the maximum by the end of this month and then pay the maximum off again in 2019. 2020 is a 'short' year as our fixed rate ends in the July. And I've had enough. 25 being transferred from everyday spends to the 13 step plan. I want to colour another brick in! So that's 41% of the count down house covered!

Well, sorry one and all, I'm a very boring person having another nsd. Tomorrow won't be as I need to put fuel in the car before traveling to London and then even further south on Thursday. How come some months I can spend nothing and be happy and others I'm just a spendthrift.

Oh well, it all helps the mortgage free plans.

As predicted I did spend today 50.01 on fuel then 14ish on breakfast for me and Pickle at a motorway service station. Yes it wasn't the cheapest option, but we both ate well. And we were there for over an hour which can ya both a break during our 6 hour journey. I'm workin tomorrow, will aim for a nsd, but, you never know.

Another nsd for me (couple of bits on expenses, but that doesn't count) resisted drive throughs on my long work commute (London to Eastbourne and return today)

Tomorrow will be a bit spends as I'm taking Pickle out for the day in the big smoke. Oyster card costs, lunch out, a treat or two and possible entry to a museum, depends on the weather. If is bad I'm tempted just to ride the dlr for a couple of hours to see the sights, or take the river taxi, I know that's a bit more than the trains, but Pickle will Love it.

well, what started as an excellent month is soon decending into near disaster. Sister in law's wedding and some time in the Big smoke socially as well as for business has put a big dent in the monthly Finances and that's without our proper holiday next week. All will be fine, I can juggle and wam. Part of the overspend is fuel for the work trips, I've done a lot of miles for work that will be reimbursed at the end of the month, that, along with all the overtime money will be lovely. I've also just been booked for another 3 day's over time next month, along with another reasonably long visit so high fuel costs again, but high expenses again too. Hopefully, with these two months of additional pay the average monthly amount needed for the 13 step plan will drop a bit and I can start to get a little bit ahead.

there I was thinking today was going to be a nsd when I realised that the car needed fuelling for the long drive home. So, 67 later and taking my fuel spends for the month close to 200 I'm all set for the journey north tomorrow. I've got to call into one of my nurseries on the way home as there are a number of issues I need to speak to them about, but I'm hoping no longer than half an hour to pick up some papers and catch up with the manager.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

So, half a week since my last post and the smugness of the first week of the month has hit me. Financials are (ynab) disasterous. Every single one of the everydays spends pots are overdrawn and we are on Holiday this week. A me A food shop was delivered to the cottage this evening - nearly 80 and really not a lot to show for it.
I've precooked two lots of attraction tickets for the week and various other spends. I'm not going to wam as yet. My wage slip, with lots of overtime on it will be generated the early part of the week and I also have expenses pending for the start of next week too. The rest of this week shouldn't cost me much. I've got all the food in and 2 days worth of entry tickets are paid for. I am at 'sack it' point. Ok my mfw dreams take a bit of a hit, but next year should be better as I'll have more hours for work, which is looking like approx 200 a month extra before any expenses and overtime.

Such a lazy day today, amazing considering we have a 2 year old! Pickle had a lie in until 7:30. Then lazy breakfast followed by a bracing walk on the beach outside the Holiday cottage. Then up to the play park for a bit. Back to the house for lunch then we all had an afternoon snooze. Hubby took Pickle back to the beach late afternoon while I prepped dinner. Now just having pre bedtime tv then An evening of knitting awaits. I'm making pickle a new blanket. His baby blanket is getting too small so he now needs a single bed sized one. I'm knitting squares which I'll see together later. My aim is to knit 1 square a night while I'm here. So far, I'm on target. Could do with getting a bit ahead tonight as we have friends coming tomorrow so I'm unlikely to get any done then.
    In other news, a nsd.

So October October. Another spends month (need to sort myself out. It started so well with a good run of NSDs and quickly descended into disaster. I think I should be in mse detention, writiing lines.

    Here are the highlights:

    Holiday
This has been the cause of the major overspends in the everyday pots. I'll do the final add up over the coming days, but it's safe to say I've been a spendthrift on Holiday eating, and days out. But, it was a lovely holiday, it just needs budgeting better. From January (when my additional hours and therefor pay kicks in, I will add a holiday category to ynab in the same way as I have my Christmas and Summer holidays pots.

    Fuel for the car
I need to remember that long drives for work = more money to fill the car up. I do get my expenses/mileage reimbursed but I always want to overpay that money, but that's not possible. It's going to be another spendy month on fuel, but it should then calm down again.

    New bedroom windows
I do have the money for these 'off budget' but have decided to pay for them from the 13step plan money. It sets me back temporarily, but I'll be fine.

So, the verdict is in.. its been a spendy month!

    Groceries: 312.72/200
    Household: 17.59/50
    Spends: 259.75/100
    Eating out: 228.22/100
    Fuel: 187.28/70 (mostly work travel)

Mop pot 59.25 I thought this took me to my overpayment allowance this year but I've rung the mortgage company and have around 240 left until the end of December, so that's my target for the rest of the month.

13 step plan to mortgage neutrality-565
    Windows
    Plasterer deposit
    Covering overspending
Paid for friend's locksmith this morning (should be getting that back tonight)

So, this means, in order to meet my July 2020 deadline I need to put 1185 into the plan in December. This is unlikely to happen as we've booked the plasterer for towards the end of December. She's not cheap, but she is brilliant and I'm happy to pay her to do a good job. Im just going to see how it goes and do what I can. I'm going to try not to stress about it.

I'll be back tomorrow with my start of the month update and hopefully some target setting.

    Have a good evening everyone.

    Wish.

First of November and the first of the month bills have gone out. I've also done some Ynab money shuffling of some pots as it's only a 4 Monday month (thank goodness) so some pots were initially over funded.

As usual, mortgage interest hasn't been applied yet but, thanks to the Tilly tidying I was able to do into the mop pot last month and from this morning there is already plenty in there to cover whatever interest is added.

Today I have a whole day (we'll 8:30-4:30) with no appointments etc and Pickle at the Childminder's. I've written a list, so let's see how much I can get done. It should be manageable if I don't procrastinate, but, I know me!

Hope everyone has a lovely day.

    Wish.

    Evening all.

You will be pleased to hear I haven't completely blown the budget on the first of the month. (Hooray) a few grocery bits and some items for the service at church on Sunday leaves things looking ok.
I've also pre-booked 3 tickets for an imaginative play place tomorrow for Pickle and 2 of his friends. I'll get reimbursed the other two tickets, so a 4.50 spend from the spending money pot. Friend who had the door lock issue has repaid me, so my 13 step plan is looking ok at the moment, but that's unlikely to last. If I can end the month more or less where I am now, I will have done well.
Mortgage interest appeared on the account in the middle of the afternoon - it's 59.54 from a 31 day month, so below the 60 a month mark every month now. Next stop <50 a month interest. I think that may take a while though as overpayments have to slow. I've broken the last of the available overpayment down into Mini targets for this month. Anything not achieved can roll over into December, then the new overpayment allowance kicks in in January. Exciting times!

While I'm here and now I'm nearly 1/3 of the way through my challenge, I thought I'd do a little summary of where I've come from and where I'm at.

    100 brick house
    Started with mortgage at 36k
    Each brick worth 400
    27/100 bricks of mortgage paid
12/100 bricks, cash in offset pots

    13 step challenge
13 mini targets to be mortgage neutral in 29months
    8/29 months completed
2/13 mini targets completed (step 2, 2k emergency fund & step 12, 375 for 'commercial clean of old & new properties.')
    Currently working on:
Step 1: (mortgage payment and overpayments) 4670.74/11,600
    Step 3: ( one month's budget amount) 1015/2400
    Step 4: (white goods repair/replace) 265/1000
Step 5: (bills increase at new house) 800/2900

    Approx 250 behind schedule.

Whether that 250 to make up is achievable or not I just don't know. We shall have to wait and see.

    Night all

Evening all, Sunday again. Quite a chilled weekend for us, Pickle has a virus of some description, so has been sleepy and clingy most of the weekend. We did manage to pop out to see our friend's newly purchased house today, but that's as far as we've got. A nsd today, but not yesterday. Few Tilly tidies to the mop pot.
Packed for the week away with work next week. Tomorrow I just need to blitz the house and set off (need to drop Pickle off at my parents' though. Nothing is ever easy. )
    Have a good week everyone.

Once again it's been nearly a week since I updated.ive been away with work most of the week and being stuck in traffic has meant lots of little snack purchases. I need to put a box of 'marginally healthy' stuff together to keep in the car to stop this. Maybe dried fruit or something (I know nuts would be an option for most people, but I'm allergic, so those, and most of the cereal type bars are off the list) This should be my last travelling of the year, which is bad news for my expenses income, but I may e able to pick up more supply work as I'm home a bit more. (I've already got one afternoon next week)

    Yesterday was a nsd.

This morning Pickle and I were up and out early to do the food shop - it was about 12 this week, which is Pinky Pig territory. The asscouiated 'household goods' spends we're about the same - Pickle has gone up to the next size in nappies and they cost more! I also bought the dw & wm cleaning things as it's a while since I've done them. Wm one already done and I just need to empty the dw when it finishes shortly to do that one.

All everyday budget pots looking ok at the moment. Last night I started the subscriptions for both toilet rolls (plastic free packaging) and razor blades (again, plastic free packaging) I made the decision to do these a while ago so have been putting the money aside until my stores had run low and I was ready to order, so no effect on the everyday budgets. Subscription services really work for me. Next one to start sorting is toothbrushes (plastic free ones) and hopefully our washing liquid provider will start doing dishwasher ones shortly too.

Pickle is have a tv morning. I still think he's fighting off something viral so I'm not too bothered considering we are going out for a walk with friends this afternoon so he will get some fresh air and excercise then.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

    Wish.

Your totals are looking great Wish . and go you with that grocery spend. If it included a pumpkin you won't need to shop again for a month

If not, I'll ask Foxgloves, I'm so inspired by her mse veg prep.

Pickle has spoiled my grocery shop for the week though as he's requested different coloured playdough. I only had yellow food dye in today, so he got yellow, but he's requested pink & blue AS WELL and shipping for it is what he wants to do tomorrow. It's not going to break the bank though, so I don't begrudge him it really.
