Taking it slowly, but doing it well. 13th Jul 17 at 7:39 PM
    Good evening all,

I'm rejoining this thread and you lovely people after a break of a few years.

I've got a new user name, but only because I can't get back into my old account. (My old diary was called 'Today is not a NSD'

I've kept the start of my username the same, so it's still a big wave hello from me, Wish.

A quick (I promise) update from me.

I'm about to turn 35 (still wish I was 25)

I now have a 1 year old little boy - Pickle

I'm currently on extended maternity leave/career break/unemployed (I took the statutory maternity pay from my high pressured, long hours, no social life job, handed my notice in whilst on mat leave and , because I didn't take any occupational maternity pay, I didn't have to repay any money. )

Husband is still a freelance audio visual engineer in the entertainments industry

Still in our 2 bed Victorian terrace, which we still love.

We still want to be mortgage free, but it's going to take a little longer than we thought when I was last here.

    So, why am I back?
I need some motivation and some accountability, need to get back on the no spend days. Need to curb some bad financial habits that have crept back in.
Need to lose some weight - nsd will help by no cake shop stops or treats from the discount supermarket at the end of the road.

I'm at the end of my maternity savings.

When I found out I was pregnant I stopped overpaying the mortgage and diverted all that cash into a maternity leave 'fund' to that I added my statutory maternity pay as it came in, 5k from an inheritance and a 5k gift from my parents.
The total of those savings have allowed us to live as we were for 15.5 months without hubby having to contribute anymore to our household expenses than he had previously.

I am very pleased with what we have achieved. But, that 'half month' is August and then the money is gone, I have no income and we will have to manage on hubby's self employment earnings.

I am meant to be applying for agency work, in my field, for 3 days a week from September. It's not happened yet due to hubby being run off his feet with work. I'm not worried about this, I will sort it when I can.

We have no debts, other than our mortgage (which currently stands at just less than 37k and has 12years 3 months left to run)

We receive child benefit, but nothing else (previous warnings have been too high to receive tax credits or anything else)
We have no family living nearby, so will need to pay out for childcare come September for 3 days a week, as I'll be agency and hubby is self employed we can't get childcare vouchers, but should be able to open one of the new tax free childcare accounts saving us 20% on childcare costs, which will be around 120 a week.

This is what I already do:

YNAB all my accounts - this is how I've managed to have 15 months off work
Use ynab to save for all annual bills, overpaying each section so I have a little bonus when it comes to paying the bill

Meal plan & cook from scratch

Try not to spend too much on things for Pickle, and try to sell on things he has finished with (this has had mixed success)

I'd love to have your support as I attempt to pay off the mortge earlier than planned. I'm aiming, from August, to overpay the same amount as the interest added to the account. This isn't much, but it's a realistic challenge given out current circumstances.

    Thank you for reading

    Wish.

Ok, just spent some time looking at the the 13 step plan amounts.
There is good news even though I'm going to spend out nearly 600 on the car tomorrow.

The good news is.... even if I don't make up any of the money I've taken out of the plan for the car, by the end of the month I am still on track to hit my goals, I'm just not as far ahead in the plan as I thought.

Also, I'm going to pay for it on my credit card, so that will be lots of lovely points on my reward card.

Phew.... doesn't mean I'm not going to try hard for the rest of the month though. (Haven't factored in hubby birthday pressies yet).

Well, if I was feeling miserable yesterday, today is positively tear worthy. Garage rang this morning, something else wrong with the car, grand total of MOT and repairs 654
So, well and truly depressed in a financial sense:

    654 = 280 from car maintainence pot
240 already put in the 13 step plan this month
134 of money previously put into 13 step plan, so that target is now sitting at -134.
I was already thinking it was going to be a struggle to make this months targets, now it just seems impossible. I do have a day's supply tomorrow 110 which is a start, but with the other pots already taking a hammering there really is no wiggle room this month.

    Can May be over please?

    mse May Goals

    1) Mop Pot (Target total 241.72)
    Interest added: 48.29/65.63
    400 capital reduction: 0/129.26
    Mfw 2018 target amount: 0/15.11
    Nice round number: 0/31.72

    2) 13 Step plan funding
    -134/872*

    3) nsds
    4/16

    4) 1p a day challenge
    11/32

    5) use the debit card
    3/20

    6) save the 2 coins (update monthly)

    7) get in size 14 jeans (update monthly)

*This is the amount I need to add into the 13 step plan for each of the next 27 months in order to achieve the ultimate goal (this is on top of the 210 mop pot target)
    The 100 payment countdown (each payment = 400) 2018 Starts at 13/100 o/s 34,750.

I've spent some time this evening reflecting on the positives of my current situation.

    1) I had the money to do the work, just needed a little wamming
    2) my car is safe and potentially dangerous things (like snapped handbrakes cable) are no longer an issue - this makes Pickle safer too.
    3) I made myself feel better by moving some of the 13step money around to completely fill step 13 (deep clean of old and new property 375) so 2 out of 13 steps are now complete. (It does mean I've got further to go on other steps, but I needed a little boost)
    4) I'm still (just about) on track to be mortgage neutral in 27more months (July 2020)
    5) May isn't over
    6) 1 day supply tomorrow and a potential of up to 2 more before the month is out.
    7) my expenses this month are huge
    8) Still waiting on a 30 check from the rail company I was emailed about previously.
    9) I have 3 additional work dats coming at some point
    10) can't say what this one is as there's a chance it could 'out' me.

But there we go, 10 reasons not to be miserable about money.

I've jiggled the budget from June onwards to include 70 a month in the car maintainence/mot/repair category, The is 1/12 of what I've already paid put this year. This pot isn't included in the 13 step plan, so I won't feel as bad spending it. It may also start to build a car replacement pot of money.

I've also upped my birthday/Christmas pot to 100 a month from now on as it's been severely raided for hubby's birthday (I'll drop it back down to it's usual 50 when I'm 'back on track')
This will obviously have an effect on the 'easy' wins of the plan each month, but it's for the best. I'm on a 'middle distance race' (rather than a marathon or a sprint) I will get there.

    Wish.

Awww Wish poor you. Car bills are the worst Well done you for having the money set aside which makes it a frustrating and upsetting set back rather than an out and out disaster.

You are right Pinky, and I refuse to devote anymore brain space to it.

A nsd for me today. Although I have done some Tilly tidying that has been hanging around all week but I couldn't face doing. Onwards and upwards for the rest of the month. An easy day's supply today, so money heading my way a week tomorrow (will drop my time sheet off later)

Tonight I'm going to my knitting group for the first time in AGES so really looking forward to that. I've started the first of the 2 baby blankets I need to make, so will crack on with those whilst having a good catch up with the others.

Hubby's taxi booked for 6:30am tomorrow, no idea what time he'll finish, but Pickle and I will do the food shop and then possibly head out to the airfield play park. We'll see if anyone else is free.

Need to do some work tomorrow nap time and evening but then should!!! Be back on track.

Have a lovely, sunny evening everyone.

Thank you PP, it was much better and going to crafty, knit group last night was just fab.

Today has been a nsd, food shopping was on the to do list, but I've 'shopped from home' today and delayed it once more. I'm not sure I can go much longer though, the lack of veg is a real issue.

Pickle and I went to the local airfield today with a friend and her little one. Plenty of people having flying lessons in both planes and helicopters and there is a play park to keep the little ones occupied in between take offs & landings. Unlike the big passenger airport locally, this one is free parking and the cafe, if you choose to indulge, is very reasonable. It's also 10 minutes away from home which meant I could keep Pickle awake, just until he got into his bed at nap time.
It was cold though, not quite sure where summer has gone.

tonight I really need to crack on with some work as I have a couple of urgent, pending issues that need sorting out, but, as it's friday, I may just pour a g&t and head for the bath and a binge of a new series on the flixnet. (My friend has a minor part in it which makes it even more exciting.)

Tomorrow we are going to head to a local country park for the morning with more friends and I guess I'll do the food shop. I've got 10 of mr M vouchers that I'm going to use to try and eek out the grocery budget. The cleaner is also poorly so hasn't come this week. So that's 20 back in the budget. I'm not going to juggle ynab just yet, but I know it's there if I need it. If it's still there at the end of the month it can go into a savings pot.

I hope everything he has had a lovely Friday and your weekends are looking suitable mse.

We were both up early this morning, the 'Pickle Chous' (rather than the dawn chorus) at 5:45am. So breakfasted and in the supermarket at 8am. Went to Ald1 as always and then, as I had 10 in vouchers went to mr M's. Most of mr m's 'wonky veg' was not only 'not that wonky' but same price or cheaper and much better quality than Ald1's. Hmmm may have to re-evaluate my shopping habits again.
22.79in Ald1 and 8 (after vouchers) in mr M's. Paid the 8 in cash, so just the tilly tidy from the 22 that has been done.

We then went for a picnic in a local country park with a group of friends. It has been awesome. Play park, picnic, walk around the resovior, ice cream, good weather and good friends, all 10 minutes
From the house. I can't believe we've never been there before. It's fab. A very
Easy place to have a nsd in the future.

Hubby working away today, but Home tomorrow. And wants a bbq. Some of the picnic things I bought today will be fine for tomorrow, but we are missing the vital ingredients of coal and meat. (I'm wondering if hubby is deliberately trying to ruin the budget this month! )

I'm currently sat in the car, outside of the house while Pickle snoozes and I'm wondering whether to stay here or whether to drive to the supermarket to get the crucial items. Not sure how many are coming yet though, so I'm probably better off waiting as I don't want to over cater.

I hope everyone has sunshine and is able to enjoy it. I think it may be paddling pool out again after pickle's nap time.

Im holding my hands up and saying I'm struggling this month. This is the hardest month since I returned to my mse ways.
    Car mot & repairs
    Hubby's 40th
    Pickle's birthday
    5 week month
Switching utility companies and both old & new company taking direct debit payments this month
    are all taking their toll.

I have gone a bit ostrich over it all, but I need to come up for air now:

Yesterday 26 of the squeaky grocery funds for a bbq party hubby wanted both becuaae it was nice and becuase it's birthday week.

Today was 17 in the blue & yellow pleasure palace, quite restrained I feel, and all from the household goods pot which is actually the most healthy currently.

Tomorrow marks half way through the month, so it's down hill to pay day from here (and I do get a little bit of money on Friday)
The out-law's have landed at a local hotel for birthday week. (We don't really have space for them to stay here, not that I'd actually want them too, they are not the easiest people in the world to get along with. )

Right. Ignoring my targets below and signing off to go to bed. Here's hoping things improve tomorrow.

Sorry you're having a challenging month Wish. It's pants when everything comes all at once You've done so well to have everything covered with your savings pots and all your forward planning has protected your family from the stress of unfunded emergencies like your car.
I hope you have a lovely party and a happy, thrifty rest of the month xx

Thank you for your kind words PP, we are in a good situation and can afford to take the knock backs once in a while. Let's just hope June is a saving month, not a spendy one.

The birthdays over the last couple of days have been lovely. Hubby & Pickle appreciative of their gifts and the days out have been fab.

Money wise I've lost track of things a bit, bank accounts an ynab up to date, but my targets below will not be quite accurate.
Yesterday was a nsd, Wednesday wasn't.
Had to pay my ynab subscription for the year which will need covering from my wages/expenses this month, not ideal, but I've put it in the budget for the next year going forward. Overend on the utilities section, caused by both old and new suppliers taking a payment has been covered by supply wages that came in today. So after that not a huge amount left to start rebuilding the 13 step plan, but things are looking good going forward.

Next week I've got 2 days at work, 1
Day is a normal, salaried day, one is an additional hours visit day, so that's overtime plus travel. I've also got a day's supply. All the extra money is a start for June's pots as the supply will be paid on the 1st and the extra work hours with my June salary.

Submitted my expenses claim form for work yesterday, it's the expenses from the big trip I did after expenses deadline day in April, so it's huge and wil start to rebalance the budget a little.
Today is washing mountain and taking Pickle out to spend some birthday money (he is going to get a helmet to accompany his new scooter before we go scooting tomorrow in the park.) the rest of his money he will save.

Right, continuing the limp through the month.

The craziness of birthdays and in laws visiting has been replaced with the crazy normality of normal life. Hubby left for a work job this morning, he'll be back Wednesday night.
Pickle and I returned the cake tin mould thing, bought a 'special hat' to go with his new scooter (this is likely to be a battle ground) and got fuel for the car.
The 30 cash deposit for the cake Tim has been returned and accounted for in YNAB, so it's technically 'free' money now. Will see how long it lasts, I'm rubbish with cash.
Fuel for The car is 10 under budget, and should last me well into June. I've got a work trip next week, but it's only 150ish miles. So that 10 should be freed up to go into a Savings pot at the end of the month.

I'm hoping for a low spend weekend. Taking the pickle to a local park to ride his scooter first thing tomorrow, then Mum and dad are arriving for 24hours. Sunday is church, pickle's nap, then usually a park trip. Weekend over in a flash.

My 1 job nap times and evenings this weekend though is to tidy the office.... I've too much work to do to work in it in the state it's in!

Evening all, has everyone had a lovely day? Ours has been super super lovely.

Scooter learning for the little one, lots of waterplay, playing with the train set. A visit from the grandparents (my parents) bacon butties, a Very gratefully received shepherds pie made at Pickle's request and a nsd.

I panicked slightly at lunch time due to the fact we'd consumed most of the bread for the bacon butties, but I then remembered we had left over bread rolls from last weekend's bbq in the freezer, so no spending required. (I've also got some wraps in the freezer so I can eek out the shopping for another day at least. )

I'm beginning to feel a little bit better about the budgets as we eek into the last third of the month. I've had quite a frugal week and the next week at least is looking busy so opportunities to save will be less.

I will need to do a food shop, there is only 23 left in the ynab pot, but I do have 30 of cash in my purse, 53 seems a lot
More manageable for the remainder of the month, let's see what happens.

I hope everyone enjoys a lovely day tomorrow.

I am still loving this beautiful weather. Doors and windows open. Washing put out on the line before lunch already dry and able to be put away.

Friends coming round this afternoon. My friend's 8 year old is going to use all of Pickle's wooden railway track (he got a load for his birthday) to build an 'awesome' track system. The 8 year old is so excited that I asked him to do this and Pickle will love it.

So far on track for a nsd. Currently sat down relaxing while Pickle naps playing the 'advert
    Break jobs' game.

    Love life.

Evening all, how is it going in mse world?
Little old Wish over here has been doing the number crunching...

Today Pickle and I did a food shop, a smidge over 36.00. This takes me right up to my budgeted amount for the month and chances are I wil have to buy a few fresh bits between now and the end of the month. I don't track cash quite as carefully as I do debit and credit transactions so the 30 cash I have in my purse will be the cushion for this pot. (technically 20 of this is money saved from the cleaner being poorly, but needs must this month)

Pickle and I enjoyed the sunshine all day and he still wanted to play outside as the heavens opened about an hour ago. Thankfully the lure of tea brought him inside.

While he's been having his post tea time tv fix, I've been doing some number crunching. (Be warned, you may not be able to follow this...)

I'm forgetting about the 872 target for the 13 step plan this month. This amount will just have to be divided amongst the remaining 26 months of the plan (about 33 a month)

I've worked out what I 'owe' the pots I've raided for the car, birthdays and the ynab subscription as well as the amount I still need to make the mop pot target.

When I add all this together, take out the income I know I'm getting before the end of the month (conservatively estimating my work expenses as I haven't got the exact figure in front of me) I'm 96.90 short.

So that is the challenge: 96.90 in 10 days. There will be some easy wins:
I've underestimated my work expenses and I know there is a little surplus in one of our fortnightly subscription pots. I am still awaiting a cheque from a rail delay which I will chase tomorrow (on Work time as it was a work trip)
There's still 10 in the petrol pot which I'm unlikely to need to use for fuel for the car, but am hanging onto it at the moment just in case. The cashback rewards on the bank account is showing 1.68 due at the end of May. I'm going to add this 96.90 as a new mini target to seee how I get on.

If I achieve this then I'll be back to where I was financially at the start of May, although I will have moved slightly further forward than required in terms of the mortgage overpayments.

You all know I like a detailed plan and I definitely like a challenge.

Evening all, what another totally lovely day. Sadly I've been stuck at my desk working today so haven't been able to enjoy it. I am firefighting all the time at the moment, I just don't seem to be able to get ahead of myself in any way shape or form.
A day's supply teaching tomorrow. But it won't be paid until a week on friday which is the first of June, so doesn't have any impact on my May figures. Which is good in some ways as I wouldn't need to try to make that final 96.

I cashed out 13p from Qm33 late last night which I've added to my 'bonus money' total, but other than that the only thing I've done towards meeting my target today is to have a nsd. I didn't even get a chance to chase the 'delay repay' cheque from the train company. Which I much do becuase it's nearly a third of the total I want to find by a week on Thursday.

No idea what tomorrow holds in terms of spending but it has the potential to be a nsd.

I hope everyone has a lovely day tomorrow.

I am still loving and enjoying the weather.
I've done my supply teaching day today. Really straightforward, TA support all day and one complex child taken to another class for the afternoon. I was happy to support him in lessons, but the head of key stage said it wasn't fair to have two complex children I don't know. I would go back to that school. As have previously said, money for that comes in on the first of June.
Wage slip for my main job arrived today, so I've ynab'd it to affect the budget on the day it's paid (next Wednesday) exactly the amount I expected.

Also... the train delay cheque arrived, so I will pay that into the bank either tomorrow, if I'm home in time. Or on Friday, and that's 30.30 towards my 96 target.

A nsd again. Hooray! These are going surprisingly well considering the amount I've spent this month, I guess it's becuase I spent a lot of money on just a few days.

Main job visit & inspection tomorrow, that's additional hours (will be paid at the end of June) plus expenses.

Hubby home later this evening, he's around tomorrow (Daddy in charge while I work away) then he's off to a food festival (working) for the weekend on Friday.

It's all go in the Wish house. Have a fab evening.

I am shattered! Early start this morning. Grilling from an inspector for the majority of the day (thankfully the outcome was successful) then a hideous drive back up the M6 tonight.

Thankfully I arrived home just in time for a pickle cuddle and his bath & bed time.

This evening I've proof read a friend's job application form and attempted to control the migraine I knew I would get after today's activities.

Money wise, no bank account activity, but some spends on snacks in a service station on the way home as I'd run out of the things I'd bought with me and I knew I was about to hit a traffic jam.

Hubby isn't now working tomorrow (hooray) so we can have a family day. We're taking Pickle to a local ish NT place for some more scooter training. (As long as the weather holds)

I hope everyone has a good Friday.
