No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries June 2017 30th May 17 at 4:29 PM
Here we go again for another month. As usual this initial post has been shamelessly copied from the many previous months. A big thank you to er, mcculloch29, that would be me, for starting us off last month.

Welcome all newbies and regulars to this very friendly and chatty thread where we give lots of lovely tips on how to use up your stash and lots of support and encouragement if you need them.

Keep up the pampering and keep down the spending: letís make the naughty step an empty and lonely place this month (rather than one so long that it can be seen from space)! Will this be the month when the "usual suspects" rein it in a bit? Let's see..... (but I doubt it!)

Remember - those products do nothing for you while they are stashed in drawers, boxes and cupboards!

We are eternally grateful to Katie Clampet who set up this fab challenge in January 2010. Here's her original challenge post:

"No buying any new toiletries, cosmetics, perfume etc... until I have used up ALL the ones I already have. I got a huge amount of (really nice) stuff for Christmas but I am going to resist the urge to browse Boots, Asda, Superdrug etc, and pop another tub of cream, face scrub, shampoo or conditioner into my basket. I reckon the stuff I have will last me until possibly June. I have decided that the money I save I will put into my special holiday account. Anyone else?"

Lots of us have taken part in the challenge over the past few months (and some of us even years!!) and are making great progress in reducing our stashes and unnecessary/excessive spending.

Regulars ignore this, but a quick resume is always helpful for newbies:

Why not add the challenge to your signature as a reminder?

How about taking a bit of time to do a stock-take and see if there are any gaps in your stash that you might need to spend on this month? Some of us set a budget for the month for essential purchases or to help with withdrawal symptoms, others like to go cold-turkey!! Other ideas which some people find useful: Listing everything out so you can cross things off as used to increase the sense of achievement, and putting a sum of money in a pot each time you use up an item to save for something you really want, or simply to assist in making future essential purchases "cash neutral".

Remember the challenge is about making the most of your money, enjoying your products, finding which products really suit you best and are worth buying, giving yourself a well-deserved pampering and breaking the habit of buying for the sake of buying. In money-saving tradition, it should also be about making your products l-a-s-t as long as possible (although the temptation of using an unloved shower gel extravagantly to finish it off is sometimes too much to bear!).

Brand new products (or opened perfume) sell well on eBay.

Unsuitable products can be repurposed and used for other jobs (shower gel/shampoo as handwash etc).

Some items can be returned to certain stores for exchange (for essential items or gifts!!) without a receipt.

Unwanted items can be recycled as gifts or for gift hampers (saving the money you'd have spent on gifts).

Unsuitable items can be donated to charity or a local women's refuge as mentioned earlier

It helps to avoid the places where temptation lurks for you; be it QVC, Boots, Body Shop, email newsletter, the supermarket toiletries aisles, Grabbit board, online toiletries browsing, seductive department store beauty counter offers etc. Remember retailers are making offers and promotions all the time, so there will always be another deal! Honest!

Good luck all for June and indeed the coming months, and remember to keep your stash lists updated, keep popping in for inspiration and support and to report your UU's and IN's, especially any sales bargains - we want a nosy!

Welcome to all newbies - the more the merrier. Please introduce yourselves so we can welcome you properly! Do de-lurk if you are lurking, this is one of the friendliest threads on MSE.

Oh - and anyone thinking "OMG my stash is FAR bigger than all of theirs, I cant possibly join" - believe you me, we have been doing this challenge for well over a year some of us - you wont scare us, and I can almost guarantee that someone somewhere will have had more and survived.... we are very supportive (and protective - so don't be scared!!) oh - and did we mention that are nosy??!!

    Useful abbreviations and jargon!

    WBA - Will Buy Again
    UU - Use Ups
IN - Self explanatory - stuff you've gained into your stash - warning: lines may be given out for unnecessary purchases or you may be sent to the naughty step!
NBI - A non-bought item such as a present, gift with purchase or free sample
WNBA - Will Not Buy Again!
Glitch - when a shop/online store make a pricing mistake so you end up paying less or even get freebies!
PYN(M/T/W/Th/F/Sa/Su) DELETE AS APPROPRIATE! - Paint Your Nails Monday/Tuesday...... it allows everyone to try and finish those dastardly nail varnishes with group support! You can never be too groomed for this thread. Also see PY(T)N... - for toenails!
Splutterer - the stage where an item is nearing the end of it's life and spluttering - also the most annoying and seemingly never ending stage!
GWP - Gift With Purchase - a sample or mini sized item
HG - Holy Grail - this is the product you would go back for time and time again, it does the job brilliantly, and is either economical, or so fantastic price becomes no object!
NPI - Near Purchasing Incident (OMG we all have those!)
LHJ - Long Haul Job - for those products - love 'em or hate 'em - that never seem to end no matter how often you use them
PRCP - Pink Rose Candle Philosophy inspired by Erma Bombeck who said: 'If I had my life to live over again I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose that melted in storage'. Don't keep things 'for best' or 'for a special occasion'. That day never arrives. Give the best to yourself now and enjoy it. (Thanks to McCulloch29 for introducing this thought provoking sentiment to us)
GA - for an out that was given away to charity, as a present, or "just because" rather than binned or UU
TA - for an out that was thrown away due to going off (generally as it has been lurking at the back of a stash since time immemorial) or for any other reason such as a broken container or spillage
PP - Project Pan: a list of specific items targeted to be used up

If anyone can think of any more we can add to the list so newbies won't be intimidated by our jargon!

Here is a list of our lovely, fragrant ladies who have polished and pampered their way through their products and managed to get their toiletries stash under control. Ladies - congratulations, you are an inspiration to the rest of us, xx . Thanks also to InaPickle who suggested we start the Graduate list. To join the list of graduates let us know by posting that you are graduating in big colourful letters, that way the OP can easily spot you and add you to the list, or better still - PM the OP as the thread can move really quickly! You may also wish to add how many products you have used up during the challenge. Good luck ladies! xx

One last IN for the month, hopefully:

Paula's Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser I got this for £10 off someone, it's brand new, never been opened. It's £21 from the website, and I'm only going to be using this on the days when I'm off work and when I'm a bit more oily.

This looks amazing. I should hunt for one maybe

    No UUs yet for me.

My hayfever has also been terrible this week, i think all the wind we've had hasn't helped!

I do have some UU and a few Ins:

Lush Sakura Bath Bomb WDNBA. Really disliked this, did absolutely nothing for the water. I'm becoming more and more reluctant with the bath bombs, especially the ones costing almost £5
Dove Original Deodrant (mini) WBA. This was in my overnight bag for work, finished up the rest of it and replaced it with another one.
Soap and Glory Rich and Foamous Shower Gel 75ml WDBA. I loved the scent of this, always reluctant to purchase the large shower gels though as i like to change the scent of mine regularly.
Lancome La Vie Belle Perfume Sample WDNB. I like this perfume but my goodness everyone wears it and i do get sick of smelling it.

And my two Ins from Lush. I don't live near a lush shop so thought i'd buy a few bits whilst i was near one:
Butterball Bath bomb Probably the only one i consistently like!
    Milky Bath Bubble Bar

The Body Shop Skin Clearing Tea Tree Toner 60ml
    - This was great for my combination skin and even this small bottle lasted a while. Would definitely buy full size.

Boots Extract Festive Spiced Apple Body Butter 200ml - I loved this scent - I got this in the January sales. I'll definitely consider purchasing some more body butters from this range - once the stash reduces a bit!

Dove Purely Pampered Nourishing Lotion 250ml
    - This was lovely and it definitely softened my skin. However it was hard to get the remains of the product out of the bottle. Have replaced with another Dove body lotion.

    Second UU of June:

Dr Organic Eye Roller Ball WBA. I'm sure this was an advent calendar item but the metal ball makes it really cooling on your eye area. I've got another couple of eye products to use up but I'd get this again.

Patisserie de Bain Cranberries and Cream Bath & Shower Creme 200ml - This smelled lovely and lasted a good few uses - I used it in the bath. Would definitely consider buying again but plenty of bath stuff for the time being, and I don't have baths very often.

I'm on a bit of a roll this month and getting through more than usual. Off on holiday soon and I'll try and decant toiletries as much as possible so I'm not buying anything that will add to the stash. If I can find any sample sachets, I'll pack those too.

I have a UU: Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Exfoliating Facial Pads x60

I WBA but will wait for the 3 for 2 offer as they are a bit expensive and offer makes them better value. I still not sure whether this should replace my toner or not though

    Some more UU!

    5. Colgate toothpaste, 250ml tube - for some reason I bought a triple pack of these huge tubes of toothpaste and that's only the first one gone! Replaced with the same

    6. L'Oreal shampoo Extraordinary Oil - bought this when my hair was having a dry frizzy spell and I think it did help. Technically not all UU'd as I decanted some into another open bottle of shampoo but this 400ml bottle is gone from my bathroom! Conditioner has gallons left in it

    7. Lancome La Vie Est Belle sample from a magazine - WMB, quite liked this but by the time I actually need to buy more perfume something else will have caught my eye instead I'm sure

    Enjoy your Sunday everyone

    Evening all

Few more UUs to declare and a couple of INs that were a gift.

    10) Elemis pro-radiance illuminting flash blm 50ml - wba this smells lovely and moisturise my skin well in both winter and summer.
    11) Daisy eau so fresh shower gel 75ml - wba but will wait until that certain time of year when they do sets and get another one then. Lovely light day fragrance.
    12) Urban Decay melt down makeup remover 73.9ml - wmba, when first using, this didn't always remove my make up very well but recently has been working really well and removing all makeup. Smells okay and easy enough to use. Quite expensive for a makeup remover.
    13) Clarins - double serum sachet - sample too small to make a decision, will see if I can get a larger sample.
    14) Urban Decay naked skin foundation shade 5.0 sample - too dark and like the last sample feel like I need something a little more full coverage.

Also my usual toothpaste, deodorant and dental floss.

Jo Malone mimosa & cardamon cologne.
    Clarins after sun gel.

Hope everyone feels much better soon.

    Some larger UUs, yay!

    - Boots essentials nail polish remover. WBA - HG. Cheap and just works.
    - John Frieda Sheer Blonde shampoo (not sure which one, decanted into a pump bottle!). WBA - love all the Sheer Blonde shampoos.
    - Nuxe Huile Prodigeuse (30ml). WMBA - have had a few bottles, have some more. Not sure would pay full price, but do like it, and always seems to be a beauty box or on offer somewhere.
    - Boots essentials cucumber face wipes. WDBA - cheap and cheerful. I don't use face wipes often, and never notice any difference in them, so might as well stick with these
    - Neal & Wolf Velvet Nourishing Hair Oil. WMB - got this in some box a long time ago. Nice, but not quite HG. Would recommend it though - easy to run through hair, and always left it soft and shiny. And lasted aaaages!
    - Champneys Citrus Blush enlivening body lotion (50ml). WNB - but it's really nice! There are just quite a few others I prefer, so it's not top of the list.

    So PP list is advancing
    June PP
    - Neal & Wolf Hair Oil (carry over from May)
    - Garnier Summer body lotion (carry over from May)
    - Carrefour lip balm (carry over from May)
    - Nivea hand lotion (carry over from May)
    - Champneys body lotion
    - Max Factor Mascara

And my 5 by summer list
    - Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation
    - Erno Laszlo face cream
    - Kedma eye cream (using on decolletage)
    - Ark face scrub
    - Soap and Glory Micellar water
A few INs as well, but all necessary:
    - Garnier summer body lotion - a replacement for the one I finished a few days ago, cheap from Amazon. In dark this time - as I'll mix it with the many body lotions I still have
    - Boots essentials cucumber face wipes - replacement for above, bought on the way to an overnight stay, and opened last night.
    - Mini nivea deodorant, mini batiste, mini shampoo - again, all 3 used travelling last night, and all needed for a festival coming up as well.

    One little UU:

Lush Charity Pot 10g WMBA. I bought this when i had a stinking cold and my nose was sore. Used it once and ignored it for months so just smothered myself in it last night, a bit too greasy for me.

    Another UU from last night:

Lierac Blemish Correction Regulating Gel sample WMB. It helped reduce a spot on my neck, but I'm not acne prone so I wouldn't have much use for this. And it is a bit too perfumed, so might cause problems in the future.

UU Body Shop Mango Body Whip - nice product, but I don't like fruity smells.

UU Garnier Moisture Bomb Moisturiser - worst moisturiser I have ever used. It is supposed to be "super hydrating' - ha ha ha...

TA Diesel Fuel for Life perfume - no idea where I got this. I have been using it as air freshener, but I am completely sick of the smell so it has got to go.
