Have you tried new batteries, as switching on could be using enough power to make the batteries unable to perform any more tasks until they have 'rested' ?

I have a small reading light which, when the batteries are low, goes off after a few minutes, but is reusable the next day, for a similarly limited period. New batteries solve the problem.
