    Capital One - 2nd Card

    Capital One - 2nd Card 3rd Sep 16 at 11:12 AM
    Hi all

When holding one Cap1 card you can open another once your first card has been open 2 or 4 months (it varies depending where on the site you look!).

To those that applied for the second - did the eligibility checker work & give you a chance of approval (e.g. 50/90/100 etc)?

Or did you just go straight to the page and then 'apply now' (skipping the eligibility check)

Getting a straight answer to whether it will ever work from Cap1 for a 2nd card is like getting blood from a stone. At the moment I fail eligibility on affordability, but am wondering whether I'd get a card if I put it straight through on the apply screen.

    Anyone got any experience?

If the eligibility does work for 2nd apps, then I'll wait until that says I'll get one...... if not then it's like waiting for hell to freeze over!

@Somerset La La La. Where are you seeing the main decline reason in the code?

I ran the eligibility checker on the website and it's told me that I didn't pass the affordability checks. I've just consolidated old and new Cap 1 Classic cards today, so wasn't expecting an approval. I just wanted to see where the decision codes were.

    Thanks in advance.

PS. I can see the big "Capital One is hiring" sign too

Pretty sure it's been updated as they've adjusted the quickcheck page with new opt outs etc.

It seems you can request a manual review of your limit though... I'm tempted to ask and see what they say! They used to insist that you were only eligible when they decided you were eligible - although as it's an automated decision I guess under DPA they HAVE to let you appeal

Thank you for your secure message.

I!!!8217;m sorry to hear that your credit limit increase declined online.

One of our underwriting team will be happy to review your account, to do this we!!!8217;ll need some additional information and permission to access your credit file.

All you need to do write to the address below, and provide the following information:
    - Amount of Increase required
    - Annual Income
    - Any additional information you feel is relevant e.g. mortgage free, savings

By providing this information you`ll be giving us permission to complete a search on your credit file, However, this search is only visible to yourself and Capital One, other lenders won`t be able to see it.

    App processing UK address:
    Manual Review
    Capital One Europe plc
    PO Box 5285
    Nottingham
    NG2 3HX

Once the underwriting team has made their decision, they will write out to you within 5-7 working days*.

If you've any other queries, please send us a further secure message.

*Please note Capital One's working days are Monday-Friday excluding bank holidays.

    Regards,
    Customer contact response

Looks like Cap1 have gone back to the 4 month rule - I magically became eligible a few days ago (last card opened in November).

They only gave me £200 on this card LOL. Lower APR than the one I grabbed last time (29.84% compared to 34.9% I'm on at the moment IIRC).

Got £3,750 outstanding with them on 0% running out soon, so I'll consolidate the cards again, have £3,950 on 0% for another 4 months.... and whack the 4k in the LISA. I was always going to do that, for the 25% govt. bonus.... but was going to be stung by some interest charges - savings maturity dates don't match (stupid me!!!)

    Me again...

Well I closed one of my cap one card in January 2018, I received my deposit of £49 back in the post about 2weeks later

I!!!8217;ve paid all my cards off in feb, I!!!8217;m using them now just spending £10 on each and paying in full by direct debit and my CCJ has been removed from all my reports I!!!8217;ve checked all 3

I used the eligibility check for cap one and I got the !!!8220;your credit score is too low!!!8221; messege even though it!!!8217;s increased by 150 points in the last month alone but I know that mean nothing at all

Any advise or shall I just try again next month?
Good things come to those who wait...

    House Deposit Savings: £450/£10,000

I doubt it specifically states your score is low.

Moreso that you're just not eligible.

I tried QuickCheck and can confirm that it does say your credit score is too low.

That won't be referring to your score rather their own internal scoring system

Well I was pre-approved. Then it was cancelled by the fraud team!

So I have a complaint in progress and the clowns text (my work number, which is on call phone so woke me up) at 3am to ask for my view on their customer service. So that'll be another complaint going in....

I think they've been reading this thread.... first they fix the code so can't see limits etc, now they're not giving me my low limit 2nd card so I can't transfer from one to the other.

Sadly for them, "Apply now and we'll say yes" means exactly that.... and the FOS will take a dim view when I escalate it! If it was genuine suspicion of fraud they're not allowed to disclose ("tipping off" rules) so they're clearly just taking the Michael now.....

Only ask as i had a Cap1 card..£1000 limit but not used (paid off),looked at Balance Transfer card and was 100% pre approved..applied and obviously was accepted and then two weeks later after calling them was told sorry cant/wont offer the balance transfer card,so another Hard search for nothing gained.

Did put a complaint in,but its there money after all...so told them to shove the account i already held.

Fraud can have a very loose definition - for example some places (e.g. casinos) will include things like "bonus abuse" to be Fraud. In reality it's taking the p**s, or "gaming the system" but certainly not Fraud.

Of course Fraud can also be things like false name/address, fake employment details etc - but none of those apply to me.

So I think they've ruled it out for the former - "bonus" (introductory rate) abuse.

They finally responded today to say they take my concerns seriously blah blah blah, we'll be in touch.

If they don't want people to have 2 cards, they shouldn't offer a second (e.g. Vanquis will outright decline if you hold 1), let alone "pre-approve" you for a second!!!

Even if they are technically correct to withdraw the application on subsection whatever of their T&Cs, it could be deemed misleading - so I'll go to the FOS (£550 charge for Cap1) and also the ASA because they advertise about their pre-approval on TV. If there are circumstances (other than ID or fraud) where it can be withdrawn, then their adverts are misleading.

Luckily, I should get a nice bonus from work just in time of the original expiry date, so can pay the card down - but it's the principle of the decline that's upset me so I'll be following it through

Still cant get why they would pre-approve then Approve on application but 2 weeks later decline.

Think i"ll raise this with FOS simply as you say its the principle...wouldn't mind but got other main stream cards all paid on time and never missed,so Cap1 loss.

Thought id just add a quick update.

Capital one offer a free Credit report and report directly what Equifax tell them.

Having been declined a 2nd card after being pre-approved and passing the credit check..i was then told (when i chased them) i was declined.

Very odd as credit file is stable or slightly improved since last Card application...only a few days ago when checking my Credit file with Capital one CRA it would appear i have two old CCJ"s (both settled and drop off report in October this year and April next year) one for £36600 and £25100,only issue is they are only £361 and £251.

Just phoned Cap1 CRA and they insist that they only display exactly what Equifax sends them, which is rather odd as so do Clear score and Clear score shows all the correct information..lol.

Guess who Cap1 use for credit worthiness...Equifax....No wonder after both pre-approval and hard credit search i was then later declined.

Whilst ive closed my Cap1 account in protest of being treated this way and i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole (only wanted the 6 months 0% balance transfer) im now going to raise a complaint as obviously yet another hard credit search isnt doing my file any good.

They would look at Equifax not their own reporting system.

The incorrect data on the Capital One Creditwise site has nothing to do with your declined application.

Also as they state they only transfer what equifax tell them..so thats also wrong as equifax shows correct amounts.

Id say ive found the issue...lets see what the out come of complaint is when its escalated.

They sent me the same response - my CCJ shows as something like 270k, and also that I have two missed payments - not that I can find these on Equifax direct (free trial) or clearscore!

My Equifax score has absolutely dived recently though (404 to 14), which I'm currently disputing with Equifax. They insist moving house "causes a temporary drop" - but I moved over 6 months ago, and I've moved before to a 10 point drop, not 400 point!

Escalating Cap1 to FOS next week (since they keep sending Final Response letters rather than actually investigating). Equifax are going that way too if they don't come up with something more useful than "your score is systematically generated and can't be manually overridden".

Remember - GDPR day soon. I'll be DSAR'ing Cap1 and Equifax first thing on the Friday morning!! Hopefully FOS will have forced their hand before that, just under 7 weeks..... and counting

Although I'm not a fan of credit scores, for obvious reasons - Capital One DIRECTLY use the score in their underwriting checks.

I'm approved until they see my "made up number" has gone down. Nothing 'bad' has been added to the report - infact it's all better than what they had on their records (less debt, longer at address, less searches etc etc).

While mainstream lenders don't use the score and to a large extent it doesn't matter, sub-prime use it as a benchmark.

But lenders cannot see your !!!8220;score!!!8221;.
Only you logging into your account with the CRA can see it.

They have their own internal scoring system which is completely different to the one used by the CRA!!!8217;s.

Bankrupt people get a score of 999 following bankruptcy - how is that a good judgement on ones ability to manage money?
