Kittie - Oh well....at least you've only got one set of personal preferences to suit (ie your own).

Been remembering (many) years back when I was out on "inspection visits" with my parents trying to find a place for their final years.

It didn't happen - as there were two sets of personal preferences to suit (ie both his and hers). This was very much exacerbated by the fact that the part of the country we're from is where "We all want to live - and so do a lot of people from Outside too".

It would have been possible if only having to take into account one set of personal preferences. It would have been possible if "people from Outside" weren't looking there too and putting our prices up.

But it simply was literally impossible with two sets of personal preferences to take into account and people from Outside also wanting our area.

Yep...cue for knock-on effect of even just trying to match one persons personal preferences and "people from Outside" also buying meant I've been forced to move elsewhere too and ...I know...being a "person from Outside" here forcing their prices up in turn....

    It ain't easy is it

Can I go and kill Tony Bliar (sic) now please? pretty please (if I smile nicely)? - as I do rather hold him personally responsible for part of this problem....I am joking (sorta) - but some of the responsibility for this problem does lie with him imo.

I had an omelette in Barcelona in a lovely crispy roll with ketchup for breakfast and only 8 euros, worth every cent too, was lovely!

Snow has all but gone here.

Just a few small patches, on the grass verges and gardens.

Snow gone from roads now but still thick in fields and hills and gardens.
We're wondering what we should do if anything happened to the stove or the chimney, we'd have no heating at all. Thinking of the Blue Flame calor heaters but worried the cat would get too near and set her tail on fire

MAR we have a gas heater on wheels that is square (maybe 15 years old) and has 3 ceramic plates for the burner so you can have 1, 2 or all 3 on. It has a chrome grid over the ceramic plates and I've seen them running (in the shop we got ours from) with a clip on fire guard in front so the cat's tail would be safe. Ours is a DeLongi.

prepping for the future move is ongoing, today a bit of car exploring, just 1/2 a mile in the other direction from the shop. Same lane, same bus but for some reason a cheaper area. I found side areas, nice quiet lanes and closes, nice houses and bungalows. Other area, with the viewed bungalow is more `twee` ie more `incomers` whilst locals seem to be in the cheaper area. There is nothing in the cheaper area to make it cheap, except some less grand houses on the main lane through. That gives me 3 areas so far, middle area has the shop/bus/hall/meeting place/doctors, area to the right has bus +1/2 mile away nice lane to walk, area to left has bus/hall +1/2 mile away and same lane. I am learning on my feet. Prepping is ongoing, only not for armageddon

We've had a little snow overnight.

Not a huge amount, but it has stuck on the grass and the vehicles, and the temperature has dropped a bit.

Spring's going ahead full pace down here now! Daffs are out, frogs are back in the pond, and the plum trees are blossoming. I may even get my propagator fired up now...

Happiness on this afternoons hound perambulation is in the form of a whole grassy verge covered in tiny deep purple real wild violets and celandines like mini suns. So pretty and so welcome after all the cold!

Got to love Auntie Beeb. She said it was going to rain? Well, it snowed. Again.
    Happily it did then rain...

My foil blanket stash has arrived & I am beginning to line coat pockets. So far, sons are proving very tolerant of mum's weird ways.
It may be these are a false economy & rip at a harsh look, but when the weather is this uncooperative with the forecasters, I'd rather think my lads all have an extra boost just in case.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My existing allotment has passed inspection this week, being officially deemed 'in very good condition' and I am allowed to take on the half plot alongside it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VERY VERY HAPPY and itching to get up there, hope the weather isn't too vile this weekend, t's been pelting sleety rain here today.

I'm ridiculously happy to have a derelict plot to bring back into loveliness and fertility. I shall be showing the couch grass, horsetails, brambles and bellbind Cold Steel, and any grubs I find in the soil will be put onto the bird table and fed to the burdies.

Goes off to do a happy war dance and plan the campaign.

Brilliant news, GQ! Congratulations! In an ideal world I'd be sharpening my billhook to come & give you a hand at the weekend. In the real world, I'll just have to get stuck in to the remaining couch grass on my own, and get some seeds a-going.

Thank you, I shall feel you there in spirit, at least. Good luck with your own allotment & garden.

Lovely news GQ you've finally got your wish . I'll pop by to keep an eye on the daily slug and snail count but I know you'll have well sharpened steel at hand .

According to my milkman we had 3ins of heavy snow overnight and he was batting his way through it at 5am in a very vintage milk float .
I had a rare lie in and missed the entire performance of schools closed and difficult roads . Just dampness to show on the ground when I opened the curtains . Checked local news and it had been a white out .
The sun was out this afternoon and some blue sky but icy cold . Hopefully that was one final blast overnight my poor daffs keep starting to unfurl and then go into rest mode .

Stay safe and well all .

    Evening all,

I'm pleased to report I actually got a load of washing dry outside this afternoon. Also did an hour's gardening digging up brambles. I don't envy GQ having to do half an allotment full. What on earth do you do with all the waste? Do brambles compost down?

Indoors here, it's still fly-mageddon. I think I must have killed about 15 today, but at least they are sluggish. I don't think I'll be poisoning rodents again if I can help it.

BTW, has anyone tried to alter their order on Milk & More? What a palaver! You have to cancel the order you already paid for, and start again from scratch, then put in your CVV no. again. Talk about shooting their business in the foot!

jko, I know you had a rodent problem but sluggish fat flies make me think cluster flies. They hibernate anywhere cosy and dark

GQ, congratulations on the "new" allotment! That's going to be really interesting how you manage it: I hope we get a few listings of the weird stuff you find in the bramble patches

My own preps are on hold **still** while I integrate all the stuff from my mum's house. My patchwork stash is a wonder to behold now, of course, and I have lots of half made things that can be made into a beautiful throw for my bed. The nicest addition to the preps is something that nearly went to the charity shop (my mum bought it at a cs, so in one way, fair enough). I claimed it, anyway - its a two inch deep circle of solid wood, which I'm told is mahogany, that has inserts to hold three tealights, its utterly beautiful, very simple, very lovely.
