    170000 in 10 years 27th Mar 16 at 4:39 PM
hi first post on mortgage free wannabe site -i have a 170000 mortgage on a house valued at around 230000 we have an interest only mortgage on 155000 and repayments on the other 15000 paying 676 a month total mortgage we are paying 3.88%variable rate.We received a small inheritance that we used to pay a lump sum off of the mortgage we have no limit on what we can overpay which is really good.We are both in our 50s and i am afraid i have never ever been any good with money we have spent every penny that we had spare on cars holiday etc but mostly on our children and now its our children and grandchildren i could have bought 3 houses over the last 20 years with the money i have wasted .We have 10 years left to finish paying this mortgage and if i dont do something now i will end up with no home so i must start now to make changes.I have read through as many diaries as i can and bought folders and notebooks written out budgets etc and now want to work really hard to pay off the 170000 in 10 years i am hoping to do this by overpaying 10 a day equaling 3650 pounds in a year and around 1200 pounds a year is coming off of the balance in repayments after all the interest so total around 5000 a year off the mortgage then save the other 12000 in other ways i have opened 2 isas 2 regular savers and numerous bank accounts.I may not get anywhere near to that amount saved i have never ever saved before but i am very determined and i hope that with the help of everyone on here i can stay motivated i am definitely looking forward to trying

You can't use the rain for an excuse TH - I spent a while marching on the spot whilst watching TV last night to get my steps up! Weather was grotty though - better today here, hope it is with you too.

Thats a very good idea Busy Mee1 i hadnt thought of that, i will have to look in my book and see what the items were as its been so long now i have almost forgot about them ,a fresh look would certainly help possibly in new surroundings too,you have really made me think ,thank you.

Trouble is i could spend hours in those shops and pounds ,im yet to have a no spend day which was one of the things i wanted to have at least once a week and its day 5 and still not done ,never mind it is saving me money in the long run i guess.Hope all is well with you and thank you for taking the time out to help me see things in a new light yet again...Why dont i see these things i wonder .

We all need help with looking at things with a new perspective every now and then TH, don't beat yourself up about it!

I'm guessing everyone's feeling flush with Christmas present money at the moment? (Probably forgetting that January pay day is a long way off!)

Yup, sometimes someone says something that just clicks and you can't help but think why on earth didn't I think of that. It's good that we all help each other

Ebax certainly doing well, I though Jan would be slow but as themadvix says my be folks are forgetting how long January can be!

Hi Try Harder, I discovered your diary a few days ago and have read through every single entry... well done! you really have progressed a lot in the past couple of years. It might be easier for me to see your progress as I've binge read over a few days - might be worth you going back and having a read at some point to see all of the amazing things you have achieved, not just by way of savings and paying off, but also in your fantastic change of attitude towards spending/saving and how you have been able to just pick up the cost of repairs etc. without any issue.
I look forward to keeping up with your diary now and cheering you along, and I hope you stop being so hard on yourself and start to realise what an amazing achievement all this is. You have spent a whole lifetime spending and not saving anything and you have turned it around and saved a massive amount in almost 2 years. You only have one salary from your husband and a few bits of money that you make yourself and you still managed to leave my savings in the dust with 2 of us working - you are an inspiration!!!

Hi ch4rly2002. Thank you so much for your comments ,that means so much to me not just because of what you have said about me but coming from you ,one of the nicest ,kindest posters on here ,i follow your diary and although i very rarely comment i am always overcome by what a loving ,kind person you are ,your family must all be very proud of you and what i love to is how thoughtful and generous you are to others outside of your family ,at the end of the day love and kindness are the most important things ,yes of course its nice to have money for oneself but also to share with others and i think that you like me get more happiness in giving rather than receiving .I have been thinking about you and your dad my father was the most amazing man that ever lived there is not one day that passes that i am not grateful for being his daughter im sure he was always very proud of me too and would have been even more surprised to see the huge change in me he is certainly laughing somewhere im sure
