As a hen and cockerel keeper myself I thought it would be interesting to ask what you name your hens and cockerels. And also ask how many eggs you are getting every day!! I know the egg laying changes when hens moult but just thought it would be interesting to see how many eggs you get. I have hens that are named Bluebell (typical name I think!!!), Muesli, cornflake and scarecrow plus some others. I am getting around 4 to 6 eggs a day at the moment!! Had a delicious egg salad for supper last night OMG it was lovely!!!

Horrible weather here today for our girls and its due to get much colder within the next few days. Brrrr!!!

Our little girl with the purple-ish comb is still ok thankfully but I bet she will really feel it when the temperature drops.

Egg amounts are going up here so by the end of the week we should have enough for a huge omelette. How about everyone else with their eggs? Numbers creeping up I hope.

No eggs from the ducks as yet this year. Ours normally start to lay again around mid January. But, they are getting on a bit now with 2 of them being 7 and the other 5 being 6 years old. We did notice a big drop in eggs last year from them.

Hope everyone and their hens and ducks are all well.

    Take care

    Hi everyone

How are you all getting on?

Mine are undercover with tarpaulin again Not the tarpaulin we used last time but a new one that covers the hens coop and the duck run together. Last time it was a nightmare trying to pin down 2 lots and making the boundary between the hens coop and the ducks run waterproof. But, we did manage it eventually.

Its not too bad light wise in there for them at the moment but if it gets really overcast we have a light in between the coop and the run we can switch on that will brighten it up for them We use the light for us to see where we are going when locking up at night especially if one of them is playing up and has to be chased around the garden

Have not heard anything further yet. I really hope it doesn't last for too long this time. I really miss seeing them playing and foraging out and about all day

    Take care everyone

Just been trying to get some photos on here using postimage as I have always had trouble with Photobucket. Thought I had managed it but no of course I haven't as it just posted the link to the photo here and not the photo itself. Guess I will try tinypic instead. Watch this space cos I will be back when I finally succeed. Or I think I will just pull my hair out instead.

Above pic of my girls dust bathing in their temporary dustbath.

YAY I'VE MANAGED TO PUT THE PIC ON!!! I'VE DONE IT FINALLY!!

Did you click on this icon from the bar of icons at th top of where you write your post?

Then you have to paste the address of the photo link into the address bar that pops up, deleting the http: that's already there.

Then you should see the picture in your post.

Plus, when you get the option of addresses in postimage, choose the 'direct link' option. (And then paste it in the icon address bar).

Thank you so much for your help/suggestion.

I did actually manage it in the end. But, have tried the way you suggest and can not do it from that way for some reason.

To get my picture on I did a right click on the image in postimage and opened it up in a new tab. Went on to that page and a larger pic was showing so I copied and pasted it and managed to get the pic on that way.

    Hi everyone

Hope everyone is ok and you are all managing since the Bird Flu outbreak (yet again).

We have now installed another light in to our hens coop as felt it was way too dark in there since covering it with the new green tarpaulin. Its funny because the blue tarpaulin we had before ended up making it so much lighter than it is with the green one. We thought there would be some difference but not the amount it has actually made. So they now have 2 energy saving bulbs in there which are 18 watts each which equates to around 150 watts between them so now it looks much better and I in particular have stopped worrying about them being in a dim light all day.

Added more shredded straw to the ground in there too today as that brightens the place up and keeps them busy foraging as we mix in a couple of handfuls of sunflower hearts and corn in with it. Also put a long flower trough in there and filled it with tasty weeds that they normally would forage for from the veg beds. Added some cooked Brussel sprouts and mixed them all in. That will keep them busy for ages I hope.

    All for now

I love some of the pictures and photos that have been put on this chicken thread. I've not got chickens but would like some one day if and when I move so I have the space.

How long does the ban on letting them out last for? is it months at a time or just weeks? I don't know much about flu in birds.

Last time the ban was months. There is no saying how long it will be this time. I just keep up with the news on certain hen welfare sites and with any new cases that are found within the UK means that the ban will go on for longer. It is when then are no further reported cases in the UK that they then start to consider lifting the ban. Unless another case is reported that is.

It all depends on the keepers set up to how difficult a ban is on them and their poultry. Those that have small holdings etc. will be able to keep their hens undercover in a barn for instance with plenty of room but for backyard hen keepers it is more difficult because covering the coops over then means their hens are not quite in the dark but there will be lack of daylight for their hens with the coops covered over.

Hope that gives you some idea about what is happening as you are obviously interested. Thanks for posting.
