    A Frugal Life for Me!

A Frugal Life for Me! 28th Dec 14 at 9:10 AM
Hi... a bit about me, I've been struggling with debt for a few years, I always seem to have a lightbulb moment when I'm on holiday, possibly because I have time to take stock of my situation. I'm 40 years old now and can't believe that I have so much debt... over 26k just on credit cards

I am married with a son... I work full time with a good salary but my husband doesn't work.

Last Christmas I was in the same boat, determined that 2014 was going to be the year I made a dent in the debt, 12 months later and it's increased by about 5k.

So I'm going to keep a diary to try and stay focused. I've already made some changes from around October: drastically cut down drinking (was drinking to relieve work stress so no good) so I've had no alcohol since October with the exception of Christmas day where I had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner, cut up my credit cards and cancelled Sky tv. This was to save money but also to change our lifestyle. We watch far too much tv. We do still have Netfl1x though.

What I need to do in 2015 is stick to the budget which has been cut as I am expecting a wage cut at the end of January, help dh to get a job and basically be as frugal as I can... batch cooking, meal planning etc.

So fingers crossed I can do it this time!

Your spreadsheets sound fab, gotta love a list/spreadsheet.
I do think treats along the way help. Enjoy your nails getting done later.

I'm at work so a very quick update for today's plan:

    - gym
    - meals per meal planner. I have hm soup with me for lunch.
    - no unhealthy snacks
    - NSD
    - nails getting done using voucher
    - have a think about a quarterly target per Littletinks suggestion
    - check bank

    Pay day tomorrow

    That's it for now.

I am aiming to put 400 to the cc's each pay so my balance should reduce by 1,200 in 3 months time. Hopefully it will be more than this if I manage to make any extra payments.

Funds are exactly the same as yesterday

    Have a great evening everyone.

You sound very organised and on top of this. The key now is to stick to your spends budget and everything else will take care of itself. Just think how much money you are going to have extra when this debt is gone. Then you can choose how to spend/save it rather than pay it all to debt. I think you have turned a corner, well done.

So this is day 1 of me properly tracking my budgets. I'm planning on continuing to post here each day plus post where I'm at with the spend budgets. Hopefully this will keep me in line!!!

    So I have spent today:

56.54 on groceries which is what I had planned.
31.72 on tobacco (3 packs this week, 2 next week and so on)
20.00 cash for me. This is from my personal spends and will be my purse funds to cover yoga plus bits and bobs such as contributions for presents at work etc. Anything left will go into the change tub for holiday spends.

    Budgets remaining are:

    160.46 - Groceries
    80.00 - Petrol
    89.28 - Tobacco
    60.00 - My personal spends
    23.00 - DS pocket money
    80.00 - OH personal spends
    50.00 - Family days out
20.00 - Lunch money for DS
13.98 - Balance remaining at pay day**
    601.74 TOTAL IN SPEND ACCOUNT

    20.00 in purse.

    27 days until payday.

** Still undecided what to do with the balance remaining from pay day. I did just have a treat with having my nails done with the voucher I had. Will keep it aside for now.

    Stew
    Pork burgers
    Soup and pudding
    Pasta and garlic bread

    List for today:

    - check bank
    - meals per meal planner
    - NSD
    - gym
    - no unhealthy snacks

Smallish list for today but that's fine.

So gym and no unhealthy snacks has been achieved

Slight hiccup on the NSD as OH promised DS a takeaway as a payday treat. This is what we usually do but was planning on eating per the meal planner. So did get DS a takeaway and OH and I will have the planned meal. OH also bought extra treats for DS whilst picking up the takeaway.

What I'll do is look at a cheaper option for lunch tomorrow to help offset against the spend tonight.

Still to check the bank which I'll do after tea.

    Funds are :

    160.46 Groceries
    80.00 Petrol
    78.28 tobacco
    60.00 my personal spends
    80.00 OH personal spends
    23.00 DS pocket money
42.20 Family days out... Takeaway etc deducted
    20.00 school lunches
    50.00 house
13.98 bal cfwd from last pay
    593.94 total

    20.00 in purse

    26 days until payday.

Will have a browse through the diaries after tea then a chilled night.

Have a great Friday night everyone

Does your DH have access to your bank account where the spends money is? If he is a bit of a spendthrift it might be better if he only has access to his own money. He probably wouldn't be so quick to promise treats if it was coming from his pocket money! It is a learning curve at the moment, hopefully he is a quick learner!

Hi Moneywhizz, no he doesn't. His money tends to go on booze so I just buy it when doing my weekly shop and then deduct from the his envelope. I have explained that I want to be a lot stricter with the budgets this year so hopefully today was just a wee blip. Apart from anything else, the takeaway here isn't even that good so it is just a waste of money.

    It's the weekend!!

Looking forward to my day out with DS. Hoping to not spend more than 25 but that may be a bit optimistic.. That allows 10 for the cinema and 15 for lunch. Should be doable.

The only thing will be not to be tempted in the book shop for myself.

No gym today as we're going out plus I'm due a rest day. Back to it tomorrow one of my goals this year, apart from reducing debt, is to get a lot fitter and hopefully lose a bit of weight at the same time. This will be achieved by going to the gym 4 or 5 times a week plus healthy eating. Not a diet as such but sticking to healthy meals and healthy snacks. I feel so much better when I'm being healthy so don't know why I don't always stick to it!!!

    Anyway, list for today :

    - day out within budget
    -. Meal per meal planner
    - check bank
    - load of washing on the clothes horse

    Have a great Saturday everyone

It has been a great day with DS it has been a bit spendy however. Cinema budget I slightly overspent by 67p and lunch budget by 2.25. Not too bad but I did forget about parking which was 4.00 and I did buy a book which was 5.00. Oh... And I treated us to ice cream

So in total 31.92 is to come out of family day out funds and 11.39 out of my personal spends. The 11.39 is for the book and the ice cream with the 31.92 covering the rest. It was a great day though. The only spend I'm actually annoyed at is the parking as I should have thought about that when planning the day.

DS got his pocket money for the pay period. He has actually spent most of it today so he has been well warned that that is it until payday. I did suggest he might want to keep some but he said he is happy to go without for the next few weeks. We will see.

I also filled the car with petrol which I do every second week.

OH is doing well. He has actually not spent anything!!

Everything on the list is done and the funds are:

    160.46 Groceries
    47.27 Petrol
    78.28 tobacco
    47.27 my personal spends
    80.00 OH personal spends
    0.00 DS pocket money
8.75 Family days out + 1.53 in cash
    20.00 school lunches
    50.00 house
13.98 bal cfwd from last pay
    507.35 total

    20.00 in purse

    26 days until payday.

It is a learning process for everyone this month. I wonder if DS will change his mind about spending his allowance all at once next month. He possibly does not realise yet that you mean to stick to your word this month. Also not much left in the family day out fund. You will have to get creative and look for things to do that are free or very low cost. You are doing great tracking the spends.

Yes, the family day out fund is looking a bit low. It should be fine though as the rest of the pay period, we can go for family walks and other free activities

I'm interested to see how DS gets on now for the rest of the pay period. There is also a 20 lunch money fund so if he underspend on that, he would have some spare funds. I am going to stick to the budgets from now on and I'm hoping this will also teach DS to be able to manage his money from an early age.
