The 1,000 emergency fund challenge. 3rd Oct 14 at 10:35 PM
For the idea for this after listerning to the 'Dave Ramsey Show'.

The idea is to accumulate an emergency fund of 1,000 sitting in a Bank account just in case of emergencies.

You must not leave yourself short in order to reach your goal.

Sorry, not been on much but no major spends or saves to report so EF still stable @1000. That's until this past fortnight

Car expenses (pre MOT short service detected a couple of issues including a radiator leak and some sort of 'bit' on the steering). You can tell what a car expert I am can't you?. I thought it had been handling strangely the last few times I'd been out but what with torrential rain at the time and shocking bumpy country lanes round here I just put it down to external circumstances. I made sure I got it checked as soon as I could though and as I wasn't using the car at all for a few weeks I didn't get it checked until the pre-MOT service. Otherwise, everything in order and total bill for service, parts/repairs including the new radiator (and replacement brake pads which I was aware would need doing before the MOT anyway so no shock there) and MOT came in just over 400 so I'm not too unhappy, especially as I'm not a danger to myself or anyone else and the old girl is hopefully good for a further year until all my debts are paid off and I can think about buying a replacement. Drives like a dream again now. That car's been a good old friend for so many years and has cost me relatively little over the years compared to what a lot of other people have had to fork out for.

The other major expenses concerned household appliances that suddenly just died. Why do items needed for cooling always conk out in the summer and heating appliances in the winter? Probably overuse. So that was another 300 approx. plundered from my EF but it was essential and the fund is there for emergencies after all. It's thanks to patman that I had it all. It's remained intact for months now so I shouldn't grumble should I? It now stands at 290. Onwards and upwards, eh?

Congrats to all who've saved anything and commiserations to the spenders.

patman, sorry to hear your FIL is't well. I hope things have improved by now for all of you. Take care of yourself, you do so much for everyone else and we don't want to see you making yourself ill.

I haven't posted in here for a while, got my EF up to 1300 and was slowly going to aim for 1500, but had a vets bill and am about to have a car bill too so I'm guessing I'll be under 1000 soon. Will update next week once the car has been fixed. Can't complain too much, it's been good to me over the years.

Just got the quote for my car repairs and it's 400. I was hoping for less but that's how it goes I guess. So my EF will be down to just over 800. Been sending payments of 1 to it every day (I tend to pick a savings account each month and send 1 a day to it as I don't notice it over the course of a month) and will really try to focus on rebuilding it ASAP.

That's the thing about having an EF. When you need it, it's there.

CBC, thank you, but my F-in-L had a pacemaker fitted last week after being admitted to hospital with chest pains. Unfortuanately, he has developed a severe infection that has lead to heart failure.

My spouse made the hard decision today to withdraw treatment as it was having no affect. It is just a matter of time before he passes on.

No 112 finally reporting in after a long absence but loads of scrimping away. Pleased to report my total is currently standing at 940. Helped along the way by a 450 tax rebate which went straight into my EF. This month I have reduced my working hours so may not be able to save as much but am determined to save the remaining 60 asap.x

So after dipping to 800 I can report that I'm back up to 870. I plan to transfer 100 into my EF when I get paid tomorrow so hopefully not far off hitting the 1,000 target again.

Have decided to reduce my growing number of Bank accounts, so will be closing all the ones I no longer use and transfering funds into my EF.

Well, EF is down below 200. 3-6 month fund will be taking a hammering as well due to having the timing belt done on the car as it was due.
