The 1,000 emergency fund challenge. 3rd Oct 14 at 10:35 PM
For the idea for this after listerning to the 'Dave Ramsey Show'.

The idea is to accumulate an emergency fund of 1,000 sitting in a Bank account just in case of emergencies.

You must not leave yourself short in order to reach your goal.

I'd like an emergency fund but it's nigh on impossible to make ends meet on my DMP as it is. Vet bills and meds are taking most of my food money as I have more than one dog. We've just had a rat infestation and I now have to pay for new electric wiring, new insulation and not looking forward one bit to clearing the attic of all the contaminated stuff. There's one fallen through into a wall cavity and smelling the bathroom out as it decomposes so I now need to pay someone to take the bath out so we can reach it. I'm vegan so can live very cheaply, foodwise but just wondering when life will give me a break. I should have tried to accumulate some prior to the DMP - I know that now. Will put this on my wish list though - great idea for making friends and sharing stories.

I started my DMP with no fallback funds and was throwing every available penny at my debts to the extent that the slightest emergency sent me into total panic. I eventually contacted SC who were managing my DMP and asked for 3 months of token payments to my creditors as I had some major emergency expenses (car, vet etc) and that got me through. I then agreed a more realistic budget with them which gave me a bit more leeway to save for emergencies. Yes, my debt-free day will be a bit further away but, after all, it's a marathon not a sprint

I really advise you to phone your DMP manager to rejig your budget. Make sure you claim more for things like pets and medical expenses as they are obviously costing a lot more than you've budgeted for.

    Good Luck

    Hello,
Things are on the up. I got some PPI back from an old CC. 400 that will be going straight into the EF when the cheque comes through. It was a lovely feeling knowing that the money wouldn't be reabsorbed into any debts.

Barbie61, I hope you are using a free service for your DMP and not a fee-charging one.
Folks like StepChange will allow you to adjust your budget as your life changes. For instance, you could ask for a budget review due to a change in circumstances.
According to the budget I did with SC, I smoke 2 packs a week (I am actually a non-smoker and always have been). This reduces my available free funds. It does mean that itwill take longer for me to pay back my DMP, but gives me enough to build up my EF and save up to potentially offer full and final settlements on some of my debts.

Sorry to read about your rat problem. For some reason rodents are attracted to the cellulite used in electrical cable insulation which is why they chew through cabling. Unfortuanately when houses are wired-up these days, they don't bother running the cables in lofts and under floors in conduits like they used to.

Hello - change of plan re our PPI money. We talked decided to use it towards getting us all passports as we have decided that we will have one holoday abroad before we buy a house. We both wrk hard and feel it will do us good to go away. I have had to take some money out of EF as I set out budgets too tight and left us almost short. Initially felt annoyed that I had to do this, but now feel grateful that I have an EF in the first place.

Just a quick update, have transferred money into the EF and now have 1177, which isn't bad considering the battering it took in March. We also had some hopefully positive news about the roof, looks like it might not need replacing after all so hopefully what I have will cover it, but I'll keep saving just in case! Plus it'll be good to have some left over once that has been paid for, it seems to be dragging out for ages which is frustrating but good for the finances.

Well our EF has not really got going yet, all sorts of things eating up our money. But please to report that by the end of May we should have way over the 1K that I was aiming for due to OH getting a pension payout and we are using some of it for EF and some for F&F's pot....as well as getting a long over due new (2nd hand) car and having a little holiday, which we haven't had a proper on since 2013

EF has taken a 570 hit. The 2nd hand Beko washing machine my F-in-L got us 4 months back has packed-up mid-wash.

I have therefore purchased an Ebac one as it has a 5 year parts & labour warranty and a 10 year parts warranty.

Still, that's what the fund is for.

We do need a reliable washing machine as we not only do our washing, but my mum's as well.

My EF has taken a minor hit (nothing compared to some of you guys but I always want to own up!). My handheld hoover packed up so I've had to buy a new battery for it - just hoping it does the trick otherwise I'll need a new one. I know a handheld hoover sounds like a luxury but with two house rabbits it's really an essential for me! I also bought a steam cleaner for the same reason, only 35. In hindsight that probably wasn't as much of an emergency but it does make life easier. Perhaps I should've been good and waited

Still yet to have the new washing machine delivered )Ebac don't have any stockists down south, so one of their 2 main stockists up north is trying to ship it).

On the plus side, payday today.

The washing machine saga took a decisive turn last night. Having phoned the suppiers numourous times, it came to light that their courier had gone quiet on them. Not knowing when we were actually going to get the thing, we cancelled and purchased one locally.

This one my mum went halves on as we do all her washing (including the dog's bedding) and the new machine arrives Friday.
