Puzz tries again.. this time with claws... My DMP Journey. I will get debt free... 17th Sep 13 at 9:49 AM
    Hi,

I'm Puzz, and I've been hanging around these dfw threads and diaries for a long time now... I've tried many times to sort out the money mess I have made but have now hopefully settled on a path that will lead me to where I wish to be...

What I don't know is how I didnt' know about DMP's before, as I say I've been here for at least 5 years if not longer and only discovered them in my darkest place back in July.

So this diary is to track my progress, keep me in check and maybe offer someone else some assistance along my way!

I have been in debt my entire adult existance. I am now the wrong side of 40 and still in debt. I wouldn't say I've had my head in the sand as I can tell you exactly how much I owe and to who at any given time. I have this all written in my special money book that goes back to 2008..

The debt has increased year on year, but slowly over the last 3 until this summer when it all caught up with me again and I realised that I had to do something now. I have tried snowballing but never had enough snow to throw the ball far enough away! And don't talk to me about consolidating.....

Stumbling across the dmp mutual support thread, I then researched debt management plans and went onto StepChange website did the debt remedy.. and there was my answer. I have read threads 7,8 and 9 of the dmp support thread, it is a wonderful place and if you are thinking of a dmp it is a great place to start.

My debt is huge and is going to get bigger before it gets smaller which is perfectly normal at the start of a dmp. I'm still at the sending letters and token payments stage, my new bank account is up and running and my salary switch is at the end of the month. It is at this point when my largest creditor (od/loan and cc) will be receiving the news that I don't want to do this anymore.

I spent the money I don't deny that. I have every intention of paying it back. BUT... I have paid out a fortune in interest and I no longer feel guilty that I can't do it anymore. I will be working very hard to get my creditors to play nice with me, and am more than prepared to sharpen my claws and involve the FOS when needed.

So that's the start.. I know a dmp isn't for everyone, I know it will trash my credit record, but I don't want credit anymore. I want to live again..

I think that's enough waffle for one morning, and being a cat its probably time I stretched out and had a little kip... oops no I've got work to do.... maybe later...

Sorry to hear you've been having (and probably will still have) spendy times, Puzz, but at least you're having fun and making memories. You certainly have a better, more interesting life than me

Feeling really annoyed this morning as I've had to sort out a problem with my bank's DD to Capital One. I was delighted to get this credit card and have worked so hard to use it properly, always paying the balance in full by DD every month. As a result, because I was such a good girl, they doubled my credit limit from 500 to 1000. It's not that I want or need this amount of money and certainly don't intend to spend it but I feel my rehabilitation towards financial reliability had really started after my horrendous mess-ups over credit in the past.

I decided to jump the gun at the end of April and pay the full card balance online a few days prior to the DD due date. All went well, payment confirmed etc and I had plenty of money in my current account to cover it. Fast forward to this morning when I checked my bank statement online only to see that Cap One attempted to also take the full balance by DD when I'd already paid it in full a few days previously. This resulted in the DD payment being returned and my bank account having a 56 deficit showing.

Nationwide were brilliant on the phone, said it was just a timing issue and as I had a basic account which is designed to help people with their finances there is never any fee added for this sort of mess. I quickly phoned Cap One as I didn't want any negative markers on my credit card account. The nice man immediately waived the 12 fee. I just wanted them to know that I'm a reliable borrower and have bust a gut to maintain my unblemished record with them.

I hope you have good news from AAD about your 'enforceable' debt. I still need to scan and transmit my paperwork about my old Tesco one that I had to wait 8 months to receive. What they sent looks very scant to me, I'm keeping everything crossed that it isn't compliant.

Have a lovely Bank Holiday long weekend. I'm doing a car boot sale on Sunday and Monday. I really MUST get this clutter out of my life. Any cash made from it will be nice too

    Monday.. again..

But house guest gone home and dd heading back to uni tomorrow so a fortnight of just OH and me bobbing around coming up...! and he is out more than in so a little bit of peace and quiet for puzz ...

    Money news..

Waiting to hear back from cabot to see if they accept my 5 a month proposal...

Surprisingly I still have some pennies in the bank despite house guest and feeding between 3-5 people most nights...

No more socials planned for ages actually.. just the way I like it.. although I may try and organise one for June we shall see..

Need to get out and do some running around over the next few weeks for work.. have dropped the overtime all bar 2 visits, as they are just so not worth my time at the rate they are paying...

Lots of expenses coming up with dd's third year abroad looming large now... flights/hotel/hairdressers/opticians/clothes/visa/health insurance etc etc.. my poor savings accounts will be depleted...

LM and LF have both successfully managed to disgrace themselves due to over indulgence of alcohol, LM even managed to end up in A & E..... parents what can you do.....

Right best get on and sort the day out before it runs away from me again...

Hi Puzz, just catching up with some of my subs and catching up with your diary. All sounds good and going in the right direction.

Personally I have totally played the game, pay all mine 400 a month between them and just don't even think about it. I've had request after request for new statements and checks but they can all do one. Get the occasional F&F offer but they are still in the 70% range. I think I'm down to almost 60% paid and at current levels they will all be done in 4 years, just at the time I plan to take early retirement.

Life is good outside of that, we live a pretty normal existence, just without credit cards. Can pretty much do as we please.

I have thought about CCA but as the majority of my accounts where opened online there seems little point. I think I only have one pre 2007 account anyway.

    Anyway enjoy the sunshine

I've been on a DMP since early 2013. I was with SC for about 4 and a half years and then self-managing. I've only had one offer to make a F&F in all that time, I was hoping by now they'd be coming in thick and fast. The one I had was just a solitary letter suggesting they might be amenable to an offer and for me to contact them with my proposed amount. I haven't done that yet as I'm still awaiting confirmation that this debt (my biggest) is actually enforceable. Sounds like your creditors have been more forthcoming with you.

All but one of my debts have been sold, mainly since 2014, and it's those that never contact me with offers

The one that did suggest they might be amenable to an offer is still the original creditor, being managed by a third party but definitely not sold on as yet. I checked to make sure

Hi BB.. Lovely to hear from you with an update, you sound like your really enjoying life and its very pleasing to hear..

I see BB and CBC have been chatting away in my absence! I too have most of my debts sold on and have received letters suggesting I contact them to discuss a reduced final payment.. but although I could probably afford it with my savings in the bank.. they are all allocated and will start diminishing in the next few months as I start to pay for dd's year abroad.. ho hum..... F & F's for me will have to wait until after 2020....;/.

I have got a payrise though which is nice.... small but nice....!

Sunday... been up since 6.30... Although I didn't wake up until 9.30 yesterday so all fair I guess.....

Have been doing money matters this morning.. refixed our mortgage for a 2 year one.. that will coincide in theory with dd finishing uni and who knows what will be doing then.....!!!

Monthly charge goes down by 45... not over paying, I am going to save this towards dd's graduation.. that's bound to cost money.. and over 2 years that will be over 1k....

I am leaving my house insurance the same this time, although as per its gone up from last year and for all the faff of starting a new one.. the cheapest at a glance is only 12 cheaper before I start adding things to it.. so I am taking the relaxed approach on that one this year...

Still no confirmation from cabot that they want my money.. guess they will get round to it sometime soon... come on guys your missing out on my 5 payment...!!

DD nearing the end of the year now, 3 essays to be in before the bank holiday.... and yep she's in bed..... but has been visiting the library so will hopefully get it all done, then she can come home... then just the one exam mid june..

Plans for year abroad taking shape, just need exact dates please nice uni let me know....

Still doing my 1 a day pot, no longer need it for dd's buses so am now putting it towards my friends big birthday do in September then will start saving it for something else no doubt...!!!

Right sun is shining, I need to pop to the shops, just got to decide when and which one's to go to.... and try not to spend too many pennies..

Results day for LF tomorrow, strange how both my oldies go so quiet after a fortnight of my relative staying.. its as if I have fallen off the planet or flown off with her.... never mind I am sure they will be in touch when they need/want/miss ? me......

That's all folks, busy working week planned so may be quieter than usual on here...

    Money Matters....

Forgot to mention that when fixing my mortgage yesterday they pay an incentive of 100 to stay with them... (like I have a choice anyway...!)

Also received a letter today about my loan that is in my dmp.. appears they did something wrong and owe me 138 which will come off my debt.. its the little things that count..!

    So debt today down to...

    27269.76...
