Hi all, what can you use to provide council, with proof that you are starting as a university student? I have a friend formal offer letter and I am due to start this September on a degree full time university masters course.
The council said I should send them a student certificate... but no idea what or where I can get that ?

They are not issued until late October - so they are no use at all for correspondence now. I managed to get a learning agreement for an ongoing course and submitted that but if your child has not yet started you may have to pay for a month or two and then claim back - silly I know but without the right paperwork some councils will not apply any discretion.0

A student certificate is a formal letter from the university which states that they believe you meet the criteria to be regarded as a full time student for council tax purposes. It is not a legal requirement that one is needed to get a council tax disregard as a full time student but it is the best proof and most councils will ask for one.
Some unis are later than others at issuing the certificates but some, if asked, will issue a letter in the meantime to confirm that you are registered on a full time course.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
We were given them by the university for a couple of years though had to chase in final year. Council seemed happy to accept a list of names and details of the university however for the final year shared house I was in0
