If you look at the average life of a car (including the fuel tank), batts already achieve this.

If you look at the cost of the battery + leccy v's cost of fuel tank + petrol, batts already achieve this.

So it's not when this can be achieved, but when you notice that it already has.

What do you think the average life of a car is?
  • Ah, I was reading comments talking about vehicles needing type approval, and not addressing the technical issues, and giving a _very_ weary sigh, but I see others have given more helpful information.

I'm just wondering which niche market EVs are absent from is going to be used to beat the whole idea over the head?

Non rhetorical question, have the VW associates like Skoda and SEAT announced any plans, and how will smaller manufacturers like Dacia cope? Will the latter just coat-tail on Renault (?) and will the principal manufacturer in these relationships restrict their technology?
  • Lack of type approval for towing is the problem.

The Mitsubishi PHEV can tow 1500kg

As its only 7-8 years very long term reliability issues of EVs aren!!!8217;t really a concern.

The introduction of tech is how manufacturers will maintain new vehicle sales. In the past it was rust, in the future it will be !!!8216;computer says no!!!8217; when they try to update the software on older hardware.

The average age of a car at scrapping in the UK is just shy of 14 years.

You may be getting confused with the average age of a car on UK roads - just shy of 8 years.

    Hi

For those interested, to help place the anticipated battery charge cycles to a 70% threshold into context, what's the average mileage on scrapped cars? ... 500k miles, 250k ... or considerably lower ??

About 8k/year, so 112k average total lifetime mileage.

That feels very low, though, but it fits with the total annual miles covered divided by the number of cars registered. Such is the joy of averages.

    Hi

So, based on an average 112k mile vehicle lifespan and 3000 battery charge cycles to reach a 70% charge threshold, we're really looking at an average EVs battery having a longer lifespan than the average ICE vehicle does now as long as it's range capacity is over somewhere around 40miles (112/3) ... good news for a change, so let's have a banner headline ...

BREAKING NEWS "EV Batteries likely to have longer lifespans than traditional fuel tanks!" ....

What do you think the average life of a car is?

Typically, about 150,000 miles for petrol, and 175,000 miles for diesel. At least those are the figures I've seen in several reports.

What do you think the average life of a car is?

I appreciate we are going in circles and repeating earlier posts, but to back up what you are saying, the 'Teslanomics' survey of Tesla's found that they have around 94% batt capacity after 200,000 miles.

It also seemed to show that the bulk of that loss (around 4%) happens very quickly, then further decline actually slows, so to reach 90% would take a lorra lorra miles.

This also seems to back up predictions that EV's should soon (possibly already) be good for 500,000 miles, and 1,000,000 miles not long after.
