Cannot open Norton Security

I usually do a scan once a week, and so I went to open Norton security and it will not open, either from the desktop icon, or from the list of programmes in the start menu. I am running Windows 10.
Should I be worried?

Literally a minute after trying to open it, an error message came onto the screen - Norton Error 8504 101 - so I restarted the PC and now it opens OK.

Yes - as long as you have Norton installed

    Case in point :

I was round at a frinds house last night - asked me to look at why computer was slow.
Absolutely riddled with malware with Norton chugging along doing nothing

    Removed norton
    Activated defender
Scanned with malware bytes , 144 instances of malware running.
Removed them and machine running like new

Only proves MBAM is effective. Why did you not use Defender for the scan? Will the use of Defender guarantee less malware?

Norton slows down your computer worse than most viruses. Uninstall it and stick with Windows in-built malware protection

No - all AV solutions are bad at detecting malware ..

You only need a basic AV as the threat landscape is heavily biased at malware and pups these days.

When choosing an AV - why choose one that slows down your computer incredibly ?
Just use the one that is created by the designers of the OS you are using and does it's job un-intrusively

..and it was a PUP within a piece of software link to from on here a year or so back that my copy of Norton Security blocked from downloading.
My installation of NIS is totally invisible to me on my computer: it works in the background and does not affect my use of the computer in any way at all (this is on Win 7 pro).

    Wrong.

Unless you are using a version of Norton from 10 years ago or a seriously underpowered computer.

Ahh the ignorant bliss that is a norton user ..

You may think it is unobtrusive , but uninstall it and see how much better your computer runs
