Reclaiming Tax deducted from Pension Lump Sum

Options
A relative has cashed in a couple of small pension pots of the last couple of tax years. This was their only income in 2016 and again in 2017.

Tax was deducted at source by the pension company, so I've suggested that they could claim this back. However, the paperwork from the pension company has been misplaced during a house move.

Is it possible to ask the HMRC to do an annual tax calc based on the info that they already hold?

Unless your relative is required to complete a tax return then yes it should be.

If they log onto their personal tax account on gov.uk they will be able to see the information the pension companies have sent to HMRC (definitely for 2017:18 tax year and probably 2016:17, not sure about 2015:16, if that was the tax year the 2016 payment was made in).

Thanks - we've logged into the Gov Online account but we don't see any TAX info at all.

Should there be an extra button?

Yes but maybe it's not available if the pensions were taken all in one go and there are no ongoing payments?

Phone call is the way to go. Might be HMRC need some extra info before they can review things?

And your relative can use the personal tax account to see their State Pension forecast which may be of interest to them?

Yes - we were pleasantly surprised by the pension forecast as it was a little higher than expected but they do have 42yrs of contributions.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
