You don't have to use a local one. I used London & Country, recommended here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/mortgages/best-mortgages-cashback#top-mortgage-brokers , they were excellent - all done by phone and email. We had slightly unusual circumstances at the time but the broker was really helpful.
