Going with 80 year old parent - she doesn't want to use the bus so we're looking at train or tube - speed/less hassle/easiest route is more important than cost although taxi is probably not an option. Steps are ok.
What folks suggest for a Saturday?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Uber? I've used it in London with great ease. Cheaper than a taxi but obviously quite a bit more than public transport. So easy to use if you've got a smartphone though.

Tfl.gov.uk has a journey planner that suggests a Victoria line train to Victoria, then a district line train to Kew Gardens. One change isn't too bad. I've found the tube to be quite tolerable at the weekend - certainly compared to peak times during the week anyway!0

Euston - Victoria - Kew Gardens is going to be the best route. There are others but they are more involved and take longer.0

Euston to Kew Gardens via Willesden Junction on the London Overground is around 45 minutes.0
