I thought it would be interesting to know what security people use (and how successful or not!). I'm assuming that giving this info doesn't put security at risk - perhaps someone could say if it does!
I use 1) Firewall inbuilt in router
2) Sygate firewall is on computer in case of router failure but I turn it off when logged on.
3) Microsoft firewall turned off
4) Avast antivirus
5) Spywareblaster
6)Prevx Intrusion prevention
7) Ewido - not full version which has expired & you have to pay for.
Everything seems fine at the moment. (I recently changed set up as I was getting a few viruses and trojans.)

Use built in Firewall on router
Norton Anti virus
Zonealarm
Virus free for 4 years!!
Although I am scrupulous about what I download or install0 -
Working in IT and working on security issues at work, other areas of the puter and network are tied down, but using a Linksys router with built-in firewall, and Norton Antivirus Corporate version.
Occasionally run Hijack this, sybot and adaware.
Tips are:
Ditch internet explorer completely
Use advert and flash blocking plugins
Turn off scripting, except for sites that are trusted - another browser handles these sites, to save turning it off and on
HOSTS file with more than 15,000 entries to block/redirect known nasty and ad-serving sites
Useless services disabled
Weekly backups of important stuff onto DVD
'Now and then' backups of files onto spare 200Gb hard drive that dont change much, but dont want to lose - music, movies, pictures.
I dont agree with tons of software running at one time, and just make sure everything is running as it should. Use various tools to check any compromises, and having been clean for a good 18 months, removed all software apart from norton

Router has a firewall built in and is setup to only allow access to specified MAC addresses.
Other than that just Norton 2003 on each machine.0 -
Router with SPI firewall
Agnitum Outpost Firewall
Kaspersky Anti-Virus
MS Windows AntiSpyware
Happy to pay for Outpost & Kaspersky meantime, both perform well for me.
Might change to free alternatives when renewals are due though!0 -
I use:
Zonealarm free edition
AVG V7.0
pop-up stopper
Peer Guardian
Spyware guard and
Spyware blaster
running all the time
then as well I use
Ad-aware
Spy bot Seek and destroy
phew i definititely need more RAM0 -
on my PC I run, Norton Internet Security, Microsoft's own firewall as well, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, Adaware and use firefox for banking online ect.
I also use a Apple ibook and with exception of a firewall built into OS X and AV software you don't need much in the way of security on a mac0 -
personally i prefer separate sleeping bags...... ooops wrong thread....
I have
zonealarm firewall switched on
windows firewall switched on (i think)
avg free antivirus - run weekly, updated daily
wireless router - with firewall switched on
spybot run weekly (updated frequently)
adaware run weekly (updated frequently)
windows bolted and door double locked.....smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
at work the server security is **** the server constently gets viruses that spread to the systems around the building, and nearly every PC there is infected with spyware, I finally got a couple of People there to run adaware and spybot but its a uphill struggle. oh well when someone destroys their intranet it might dawn on them to install proper firewalls and AV software. only 1 machine in our office has Norton Internet Security installed and thats a Print Server!0
