Hi folks I have a 16 year old son who has just left school,he doesn't live full time with me and I haven't ever had benefits or tax credits of any kind for him,as he has left education I'm wondering about council tax,could anyone tell me how many days he's allowed to stay with me before he effects my single persons discount for council tax,one week he only stops one day and the next week he is here for a long weekend from Thursday to Sunday so 4 days that week

    Under 18 it makes no difference as he cannot be a resident for council tax purposes until he is aged 18.

    In simplified terms - it depends on where his 'sole or main residence' is. There is no specific number of days.

      I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

      Phew that's a relief thanks,so when he's 18 what do you think happens then,how would his main residence be defined then?
