500 Free Tesco Points Worth 20 In Deals Vouchers 3rd Jul 07 at 5:56 PM
Update Note 12 July 07: This was in the weekly e-mail last week and according to the feedback (read it below) almost everyone has got their points. If you haven't done it yet, give it a go.

    What's the deal?

Tesco is offering 500 clubcard deals (worth £20 in Tesco deals vouchers) if you call it up and ask for a car insurance quote. That's it, you don't actually have to get a policy, just a quote and the points should be credited to your November Clubcard statement.

    The Details

This offer comes from Tesco's leaflet circulating in most Tesco stores. Have a look for it by the tills or ask at customer services.

    Any potential problems?

Some people have been told their car insurance must be up for renewal in the next 30 days to get a quote - but many haven't - that's the luck of the draw. Also while the leaflet says this deal will close on July 17th if 1.3 million MoneySavers who get the weekly e-mail go for it - it may well close more quickly! Plus of course if everyone calls the phone lines may be swamped (yet this is on till mid-july so you could do it at the weekend).

Read people's experience in the thread below to see how its going.

How are 500 points worth £20?

You need to follow the golden MoneySaving rule.... never, ever, ever, ever redeem your Tesco points instore. Do that and 500 points are worth just a £5 discount off your shopping.

Instead convert them to Tesco Deals vouchers and they're worth four times that amount. These vouchers can be used on days out, breakdown cover, gifts, magazine subscriptions and much more.

For more full details and info on how to boost your points stash read the Loyalty Schemes article.

    What to do

Call 0845 301 0771 (3p/min from BT) between 8am-9pm Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm Saturday and 10am-5pm Sunday. It's likely when the weekly email is sent out though, this will get really busy

(You can try this cheaper geographic number from SayNoTo0870: 0113 390 4000, but Tesco might not allow this).

Is it worth getting Tesco car insurance?

Maybe yes, maybe no. There's never one single cheapest provider if you are getting car insurance. So the simple answer is don't get the Tesco insurance without first following through the Cheapest Car Insurance article to find the cheapest quote that way.

    Tesco's Terms and Conditions
    • Offer is available to new customers only.
    • Points will appear on or before your November clubcard statement.
    • The clubcard must be in your name.
    • Quotes must be completed over the phone.

I just got off the phone with them. The first person I spoke to refused to give me a quote as I didn't meet their criteria as they have a high volume of calls, but he did have 5 minutes to argue the point with me until I asked to speak to his supervisor. I wanted a quote for a new car I am due to receive in the next few days, but they didn't want to quote me unless I had the car.

Being a new car you can't tax it and receive it until you have car insurance, after explaining this to his supervisor I was authorised to get a quote! However after 20 minutes on the phone the original operator told me my car model of car didn't exist and he couldn't help me until I had the car and could read out the details of the model on the log book (which I am sure will be the same as what I told him).

So after 20 minutes I gave up with out my points, and I certainly wouldn't want to give them my business no matter how cheap their quote was. If I can find an email address to write to I will be sending a complaint!

Good luck everybody else, I hope you have better luck.

phoned first time, staff was not willing to give the points or quote until I recieved the renewal letter from my current provider. Phoned again 5 minutes later, spoke to someone else. Success!. I was given the 500 points without the need for a quote because they were far too busy.

    Thanks MSE.

Waited about 10 minutes for someone to take my call. Mentioned the 500 points offer and was told I could have the points just for phoning and that I did not have to have an insurance quote if I didn't want one! Great if I do actually get the points in November - must remember to check my statement. But if I don't get them I have absolutely no comeback as I have no proof that I phoned up for a quote.

    Offered Points without Quote!
I have just spoken to someone at the tesco car insurance call centre and she was happy to give me the points without even taking my details for a quote. Brilliant! I am already a customer and have two cars insured with tesco. This time I lied saying I needed a new quote for our third car - a convertible to be used for the rest of the summer.

I did try the 0113 number first and got nowhere so had no option but to call the other 0845 option direct to the insurance call centre.

Many insurance companies charge a fee for any amendments.
Before going with any company ask what the fee is.
I used to be with the AA. I cant remember what the fee was exactly but I do remember it was extortionate.
Last year I got a much better quote from Saga and their amendment fee is far more reasonable.
If you are likely to change cars during the insured perid
    make alterations to the car,
    change address
It would be wise to calculate the amendment fees into the quote.

I think insurance companies should make their amendment fees more visible

Anyway, this is a great post, just rang and the guy on the phone was really nice and said that as their northern call centre was out of action due to flooding they would not be able to give me a quote, but heres the points anyway!!

Poor souls seem to have been inundated and they guy i spoke to was doing 12 hour shifts so they can cope with the number of incoming calls!!

Just phoned and said used to be with them saw leaflet in store about points and wanted a quote for mid Aug.

The reason why they are only doing quotes for 30 days is due to the volume of calls and also flood damage to their office so they are running on limited resources, they did advise theat web site still giving 90 days quotes plus 15% n line discount.

Anyhow no quote but 500 points nice one Martin

Total time of call 3 mins so now is a good time to call

just phoned for quote (used 0113 number, got thru to switchboard and asked for ins quote). got extra 5% because clubcard holder but it was still 131 dearer than existing insurance company

Well, I just got off the phone after approx 50 seconds. Got told that they couldn't quote me because my insurance wasn't due for renewal for quite a few months.
And then I was offered the clubcard points anyway!

Yippee, less than a minutes phoning for 20 in clubcard points! My OH has just done the same thing - and she actually wanted insurance! She was just offered the points and no quote.
  • climbgirl
I've just hung up the phone, took about 2 mins to get through to someone. I asked about the offer and he said "do you just want the points?". I said yes, he took my card details, job done!

I just phoned the 0845 number, and after a very long, very stern recorded warning, got through to an operator straight away, told her I was buying a car later this month so the offer has really come at the right time for me. She said I couldn't have a quote, but I could have the points for phoning!

    Thanks Martin!

I've just called up on the 0113 number and told them my insurance wasn't due until March 08, but if I got a cheaper quote I would switch. He asked if I was ringing mainly because of the clubcard points offer........I said yes to which he replied "I will add your points anyway - I can't give you a quote as it's not within 30 days"..............what a great result

    Must be the easiest 500pts
    Hi all
rang up for a quote, which i will need for 1st week in Aug anyway.
the guy said have the points without the quote!!
I said i need it nayway for the end of the month.
He said ring back nearer the time
    cool
  • Boonbetty
Result! Just phoned Tesco insurance and got straight through, mentioned the points offer and was asked if I actually wanted the quote as the points could be added without it. Wanted my name, postcode and clubcard number, did not even ask when my insurance is due.

Save your telephone costs by calling them on one of their many 0800 FREEphone numbers. I did and was transferred instantly.

I was told the points would be credited to my Clubcard. (They need the exact name that is the title on your Clubcard account).

The quote I received was VERY high, so don't forget to shop around using links that Martin provides.

I just got straight through on the 0845 number. I mentioned the 500 points offer and a very nice chap told me I could have the points without a quote! He didn't even ask when my insurance was due. He took my name, postcode and clubcard number and said the points will be in the November statement.

Note to people who are not successful - just ring back and speak to someone else, they have obviously been given permission to offer the points without a quote.
