Best way to get a discount on specialist tools

I’ve got a relatively new small business where I do precision metal work on small parts and I’m looking at some new equipment and the total order will be the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought. Probably about £3,000 in total. The only people I can buy this from is the authorised UK distributor as the parts would be expensive to import.

There is a package valued at £1,700 that has a lot of the kit but I’ll need to order specialist parts on top of this. I feel given the size of the order I can haggles something off the price. How do I get the maximum discount? Tell them I want £3,000 of stuff but only have £2,500 to spend? Is there a best time of the month like at the end when they are trying to hit sales targets?

Any tips or personal stories about how to do this would be appreciated as every 1% off will save me about £30.

If there is only one UK distributor I can't see that they are likely to be amenable to negotiating the price.

Can you price up accurately the cost of importing once you have included all of the costs of carriage and import duties to have something to bargain with.

But the manufacturer may have an arrangement where distributors are given sole rights to customers in a particular territory. Even if in theory would be cheaper buying from Germany or the USA, say, they wouldn't supply to the UK.

Are you going to be buying further things from them? If it's not a one-off you might be in a position to bargain with them.

Unless the distributor has a large number of sales people, it is unlikely they will be incentivised in a way that will allow you to haggle much.

You should also be wary of haggling too much; an imprudent business might accept a low offer from yourself, but if they repeat this with other customers, they will go out of business and you will find yourself with no UK support for a vital part of your business. They are in business to make money, so treat them how you would like to be treated yourself. Would you like it if one of your customers asked for a 15% discount just because they wanted to pay less?

Perhaps you could find a way in which you could pay less, but which results in them benefiting? You could offer them some publicity based on your use of the equipment.
