ESA joint claim

Looking for a bit of advice!
I was awarded contribution based ESA & put in support group.
My partner has since been awarded income based ESA & carers allowance.
When my partner claimed for ESA he was told it would automatically be a joint claim.
My question is if it's a joint claim, is it now contributions based or income based as we individually are on each!

Your contribution based claim will continue.

When did your partner claim ESA? Almost all new claims for ESA are for new style ESA which is an individual contribution based benefit - it cannot be a couple claim.

If your partner’s claim is the older version of ESA it could be totally income based or have a contribution based element with an income based top up but you havesaid it is income based. In assessing the income based amount payable to your partner your contribution based ESA award will be taken into account as income, as will the Carer’s Allowance.

So if your partner is in the Support Group his income based ESA claim would be made up as follows:
Couple amount £114.85, enhanced disability premium £23.55, support component £37.65, carer premium £36 so maximum payable is £212.05. Less income of your ESA £110.75 and CA of £64.60 leaves ESA payable to partner of £36.70.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
  • Thank you!
If I remember rightly he first phoned to claim in October/November 2018
