new LG 4k TV dropped. screen cracked. can it be mended?

We got a new LG 4k TV for Christmases. It was stood on the floor while we assembled the new stand when OH knocked it over and has cracked the screen. Is it possible to get a new screen or it it a write-off?

    You would need to contact an LG repair agent.

    Do you not have accidental damage cover on your insurance?

    LG do not have repair agents they handle all repairs direct. Our home insurance has a £150 excess and max of £500 for all electronic kit as we have a separate policy with mobile phone. If we claim on home insurance have ton weigh up increase in future
    premiums. Just wondering if repair possible and what it might cost, at this stage.?

    LG offer a range of 4K TV's from £370 to £12K.

    It may not just be a case of a cracked screen, a component could also have been dislodged or the motherboard cracked, too.


    Sony have accredited agents to repair their warranted products but like some other companies (eg Canon) there is a blanket fee (around half the item's cost )where a trivial matter will cost the same as an expensive part .


    My son found an independent repairer who mended his Sony for a fraction of the Sony fee. (A different case to the OP's as this involved item failure, just out of warranty, where Sony offered to pay half the bill but paid in full, as the independent's charge was so low.)


    However,the repairer did say that some other manufacturers make it difficult for independents to acquire parts which are specific to the brand. However, there's nothing to lose by enquiring.

    Yes it says about LG's policy on repairs on their website and on the information supplied with the TV. I have phoned them to ask cost of repair but they say it will take 48 hours for a reply and I wondered meanwhile if anyone here had had a similar problem.

    I don't think anything else is broken, as it is working fine apart from a crack mark and lines across part of the screen. It was standing on the carpet and OH knocked it over onto a plug on the floor waiting to be plugged back in. You can see the mark on the screen. It did not fall from a height or onto a hard floor.

    How much was the TV? This would affect the cost of any repair.

    Chances are the cost of a new display panel and fitting of it would cost more than what it would cost to buy a replacement TV, you could try speaking to the retailer that sold you the TV about a repair , but it's probably not worth repairing even if it's brand new

    In the vast majority of cases, such damage is not economical to fix.

    Next time, consider taking out additional accidental damage cover.

    Yes, broken screen TVs are not worth fixing - unless worth over £1000, not worth claiming on insurance due the excess fiddles, or future premium increase.
    If a claim is related to carelessness of the policy holder or their family, things are loaded against you. About the only time it is worth claiming on insurance - is if it was an "Act of god" or something that is utterly unpredictable. Ebay is full of TVs with broken screens, sold for spare parts - so you can see it is far from unusual. Learn & be more careful with things like this is my advice.

    If the TV was bought on a credit card it's worth checking if the card issuer included accidental damage insurance. See post #25 of

    where someone successfully claimed that way.
