It's a subject that's been in the news very recently, because a whole load of Chinese no-name ones have just been withdrawn from the market because they don't work (or at least don't work as they should).
Last time I looked, the consensus (from Which?, IIRC) was that any of the products from the Kidde brand should work well. That make is quite widely available, both online and in shops such as Dyas.0 -
Local fire brigade may have a scheme for fitting fire alarms.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Why has this been posted under 'charities'?
I got my last detectors off Amazon (reputable UK makes!). Most DIY places also stock them.
The HETAS stove fitter fitted a carbon monoxide alarm but it just goes off when life threatening levels are detected. You really need a detector that records/displays low levels so I have several of these around the house. I had to retire earlier than I wanted due to low level carbon monoxide poisoning - the message really needs to get through about the dangers of even low level carbon monoxide.
As for smoke alarms - the fire service arranged for an alarm to be fitted on each floor. I know someone who got some hunky firefighters round. I was not so lucky and got a very officious retired copper. :rotfl:Still, can't complain - they were free!0
