    Hi,

Thanks guys. It just seems ridiculous that I won't be claiming any benefit anyway the week I'm away as my JSA will have expired, I just needed to be signed on as it affects my insurance and I already have a job starting when I get back from holiday so if it's not going to cost the government any money then I don't get it! I even offered to pay my stamp for that week so that it wouldn't cost them a penny and they still said I have to sign off. These are silly rules! Bureaucracy, no wonder the country is in such a mess cos they need so many staff in the job centre to police these ridiculous rules.

    But thanks again.

But one of the rules states to be able to take up employment immediately.......and be looking for work........ seriously think if people were allowed to go abroad and sign on this could put the country in a more serious mess, there was a time in the 70-80s when a lot of workers from a particular country were working on the Conway tunnel and decided to sign on here when the work finished whilst working at home, it was a mere 2 hour cheap boat trip once a fortnight........ Surely it's good to have this bureaucracy to stop this happening on a larger scale, air fare is rather cheaper these days.

I'm sure if you contact NICS (HMRC) you would be able to pay your weeks NI to keep your credits before starting work
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

I have been made redundant and would like to spend the rest of this year enjoying the break after working for 40 years before looking for a job. Is this possible and then say, claiming JSA (which I qualify for) January next year.

I'm not claiming at the moment because I have a holiday booked this month and also another one in November (booked before redundancy).

I felt the same when I took VS, but I was actually persuaded by colleagues who work in/with JC+ to sign on anyway - after all you're entitled to the benefit. However if you don't want the hassle of signing on and jobhunting (although to be fair I found the claim/signing on process efficient, completing a couple of job applications a week painless AND I was able to access funding for training) then don't sign on until January.

Re overseas holidays, as many have said in this thread you can sign off if you're going to be out of the UK then a rapid resign. I asked the same question (holiday booked before I took redundancy) and wasn't made to feel bad about it in any way. As long as you're not claiming whilst you're overseas and therefore not available for work, no-one at the Jobcentre is going to interrogate you.

    Enjoy!

Please be aware that if you wait to claim until january 2012, they will use the tax years 2009-10 and 2010-11 to assess your claim so you will need to have paid enough NI in those 2 tax years to qualify.

Having last been unemployed back in 1981, then spending years as an employee, and now self employed my question is how do they no you have gone on bloody holiday?? , Id be damed if i would let some seat shiner dictate to me when and where I can go on holiday, unless I was a convicted bloody criminal on licence. It comes clear to me now why many do not sign on ,1 they get nothing if the wife works , 2 they get some spotty tit telling them you are not allowed to go on holiday for a piddling week. You must be aware fairly quickly your life has gone tit up.

i can confirm if you go out of the uk you sign off if you want to be honest and then do a rapid reclaim on return. Its alot of admin but thats the way they do it. They normally give you a rapid reclaim interview as soon as you return.

Easy: don't tell the jobcentre you going abroad, just ring them up from your mobile say you are unwell to attend.

    but that would be fraud...

It wouldnt be very successful fraud though

If you were to phone the jobcentre claiming to be ill they would send out a JSA28. Your benefit wouldnt be processed until you had filled in the form and they had received it.

In addition if they hadnt received within 5 working days from when you were due to sign then your claim would be closed anyway but instead of it being closed from the day you went on holiday it would be closed from the last time you signed so depending on dates etc there is a potential of losing upto 2 weeks benefit.
