standing charge

Options
Phoned up United Utilities to find out if an internal water meter (external can't be fitted) would save me more money than the single person discount I am currently on. Apparently, there is a standing charge of ca 130 GBP per year even if you do not use any water. This seems very high. Does it seem right?

Not true according to UU's own website.

The standing charge for a property with a water meter is £30.89 for water, The standing charge for all services is £6.90

    BUT

There are also FIXED charges of £67.27 for surface water drainage and £29.80 for highway fixed drainage.

Not surprisingly, this comes to a figure of c.£130 per year. When it rains, you pay (as indeed do we all)

    Welcome to the forum.

    The charges are here: https://www.unitedutilities.com/services/your-bill/our-charges-20172018/

With a water meter(external or internal) the standing charges are £37.89 - £30.89 for water and £6.90 for sewerage. There is also a highway drainage charge of £29.80 making it £67.69.

For those houses who cannot claim exemption from the Surface Water Drainage charge there is an additional £67.27 to pay making the total £134.96.

If a meter cannot be fitted you will be entitled to an assessed charge of £254.76.
