As a ball park guide, how much do you think you will save based on current performance ?

I would like to know if you go for the option of free panels and the company upkeeps the panels for 25years, what happens after this time, what is the cost of maintaining the panels yourself. Or if you buy the panels what is the cost of yearly upkeep? :coffee: thanks
There's very little maintenance involved in solar pv - there's no moving parts - that's what makes them so appealing. If you go for free panels they're yours to keep after 25 years.
I'm just deciding whether to do it now or wait until the cost comes down in the next 18 months.Target of wind & watertight by Sept 20110 -
Sorry Poosmate, but you are mistaken.
It comes from the taxpayer ( via the Government )
It is a Government incentive.
Nope! It's paid for by the energy suppliers.
The Government used to pay grants to people to have this work done but most, if not all of the grants have dried up because people can earn cashback from the energy suppliers buying the power off the people with the solar installations.
Ask yourself, why would the Government pay you for electricity you are giving to the National Grid? The energy suppliers charge people for that energy so if it worked the way you say, that energy would be generated once and paid for twice.
It's paid for by the suppliers.
Oh and the panels are the property of the company that fit them (if they are fitted free by A Shade Greener or Isis (currently)) and then become yours after 25 years. Obviously if you pay for and have installed a system yourself they are yours and will always be yours.
A Shade Greener will remove the panels twice within the 25 year period free of charge for mainenance of the roof but they will refit them. I guess if they have to be removed a third time the homeowner would have to foot the bill for it.
Hope that helps and it looks like the Forum Police have deleted the other thread on this subject.

Gizmosmum, I've been thinking about it too. I don't think the grants will become available again with all the cutbacks but I could be wrong. Also, the price of the Feed-In Tariff is going to go down soon (either April 11 or April 12). It's currently 41.3p per kW generated but will be going down to 36.something.
I'd like to get mine done before next April, unless I can find where I saw the reduction in rate date. lol
Hope that helps.

ok! Der! No wonder I couldn't find the thread, it's located on the Green and Ethical Savings board!
Here's the link:

I would urge anyone to read it.
There's a bit of arguing and bickering on it but people did wonder if it was a scam at first. Then of course there are always the doomsayers too. But in there is a lot of very good advice and information.
Hope that helps.

The feed in tariffs are a rate in which the householder if they have solar panels get a guaranteed rate
Before April 2010 householder that had solar panels I believe only got a grant to cover some of the costs, the feed in tarrifs pay much better rate over the 20+ years which makes it more attractive hence why some companies now supply panels for free subject to some conditions
The feed in tariff doesnt come from government I believe but from you or I in way of a tax on our energy billsWhat are these and how much do they cost?0 -

I've heard that the utilities are going to jump on the bandwagon big style in the next year or 2. Also heard recently about someone getting 4kw for 9k! On hold shortly then seriously looking at pricing - I have a large south facing roof that could hold a serious amount of pv..Target of wind & watertight by Sept 20110 -

But surely you would be better off purchasing them yourself and getting the circa 8% tax free index linked return on the investment, rather than a financial institution pocketing the cash whilst using your roof ?
Or if you can't free up the circa £13k, wait for the cheap green loans scheme to kick in, It still doesn't cost you a bean, someone else doesn't end up essentially 'owning' your roof for 25 years and you get the financial benefit of the cash-back once it's paid off ( which is also done via the cashback scheme so you don't need to find any money yourself )

If you go for a 4kw system your FiTs payment will reduce per unit. I believe it goes down to 36.1p rather than the 43.1p for less generated.
I haven't done the sums to see how this would compare over the years, the calculations depend on so many variables and it's far too late in the night to start tapping the old solar calculator now! lol
