Destination for nervous August traveller!

We normally stay in the UK in August but my family are keen to go to Europe for the sun this year. I’m ok with that but unfortunately have some, shall we say Orange Lines ... !

- I don’t like it too hot or humid - average max temp 30 deg c., but preferably lower!
- mix of beach and either history or mountains for my camera.
- somewhere you can drink the water.

I was thinking of perhaps Switzerland or the Italian lakes, with options on visiting Venice / Verona.

Madeira was an option but apparently has only one beach with imported sand; and Malta is too hot.

What do you think? Thanks.

And sorry, I know this is a challenge, but hopefully an intriguing one!

  • Northern France? Normandy or Brittany.

Your camera would love Mont St Michel (northern France).

We went to St Gilgen in Austria one summer and it was lovely, very scenic in Sound of Music country. We stayed near the lake, took the ferry boat across to other towns, hired bikes, went on a trip to Salzburg (very scenic), and another to the Kaiservilla at Bad Ischl. There's a cable car too. There was a lot to do. We didn't have a car so used bikes and coach (doable easily from Salzburg airport).

Not sure of the make up of your family. I've been to Verona, for example, and it's great. Easy access to Lake Garda and I loved Vicenza and a day trip to Venice. But that's all quite adult oriented. What about other family members? What are their 'orange lines'?
    P. S. Because as you know the other person who doggedly stuck to her lines in Europe came out of it very badly and couldn't convince anyone to go with her.:D

I'm not convinced you will find a beach in Switzerland. Seriously though I've been to the Geneva area many times and it's stunning.

The Canary islands seem the most obvious choice.

You might consider the Baltic republics: a friend is currently in Latvia and some absolutely stunning photos are appearing on her Facebook page. Plenty of sunshine there, and while the beaches are nice the sea is always rather cool.

    Might be rather hot.

Pretty likely to be lower than the OPs stated 30 degree though, especially in places like the North of Tenerife or La Palma.

The latter averages a high of 26 in August and is great for mountains and scenery.

Not sure there is a direct summer flight from the UK though.

    Give Croatia a look.
