remortgage with charge against house

We are part way through a re-mortgage and the solicitor has thrown up a problem.
There is a charge showing against the property (for me, not my wife) and told that it needs sorting before we can go forward with the remortgage. The charge relates to a UK credit card i had with Wells Fargo about 9 years ago, who i had a debt with, but have since closed their UK offices and before they did, the debt was being handled by HL legal solicitors, who have since ceased trading. After searching on the web it looks like the debt has been written off, but I cannot get hold of anyone to confirm this and my solicitor has told me we cannot go forward with the re-mortgage until this charge against the house has been sorted.I have asked the solicitors that as it is only against me, then surely its a restriction and not a charge - as a joint mortgage? They still insist it needs sorting.
Please help, am going around in circles and causing undue stress :(
