Cheap Car Hire - hiring a baby car seat 25th Jun 13 at 6:16 PM
Have you ever hired a car seat, on arrival, at an airport?

We want to know which airports have places that will let you hire a baby car seat on arrival. For example, one MSE staff member found a shop at Malaga Airport. There, he rented a baby car seat that was half the cost charged by the original car hire firm.

He cancelled the seat with the original firm, and hired with the new company, making a big saving. See the Cheap Car Hire guide for more.

Have you done the same at other airports anywhere else?

    Please let us know:
    Which airport you arrived at
Which car hire company at the airport you used
What you paid and how much you saved

Travel car seat for 18 month old
Friends of mine are travelling to the UK from Germany with their son who will be 18 months old at the time. They would like to take the Easybus from Stansted, but need a child car seat to do so. The car seat they have is heavy and not easily portable. Does anyone know of a company that makes portable car seats suitable for small children (I think he is too young for a booster seat) or a company that will hire them and let them be picked up at the airport? Many thanks.

flying to Milan Bergamo in June and will need a child seat for my 18 month old. Any tips? I notice on ebookers you can request one but it doesn't mention payment. Any experience of them?

I'm trying to compare child seat prices on American car rental sites for a 20 day rental and finding it really difficult - it seems to be information they don't feel the need to reveal until you reach the collection desk. By emailing/tweeting them the most expensive quote I've got is $400 for two seats for 20 days, so it is a significant proportion of the cost of the rental, and seems nuts to "wait and see". And in any case I'm not even sure I trust the answers I'm getting. eg. one Alamo rep told me "Sorry, we don't supply child seats at that airport location" whereas the person on Alamo's Twitter account said "Of course we supply child seats at $20/day with no cap".
Holidayautos.com gives child seat prices for all providers, but the price quoted is different than the one I'm getting from the providers I've contacted, and holidayautos have a huge disclaimer saying "prices may change without notice".
There must be an easier way to find this information out?

Take your own whenever possible. We hired a few years back at Malaga airport and the seats were thrown in the back of a portacabin type thing. And when I say thrown I mean thrown.

The ONLY choice for car hire on Lanzarote is AutoReisen!
Having used Autoreisen for several years now I wouldn't look anywhere else. Clear and easy to use online booking. Cars prepared to a high standard. No nonsense fuel policy - take it back with a similar amount of fuel as when picked up. Free great child car seats. Free additional driver. My ONLY choice when hiring a car on the island.

    Take your own.

We have taken both ours (rotating ones which weigh 12kg each, so pretty heavy) with no problem at all.

This has been on all manner of flights, all the way from BA First class right down to Easyjet.

Always been free. Just pack in a very large and strong plastic bag - we use the ones that mattresses get delivered in.

    London Luton Airport
We flew to London Luton and found no car hire company offering free child seats so I searched for a local supermarket and found an Asda very close. I got the car, nipped to Asda, bought two cheap seats at 18 each and then back to get the wife and two small kids. It took me about 20 minutes in total. I checked with the store the day before and asked them to hold me two over which they did.
