He is currently on all 4 waiting list but can't find out where he sits until 2nd of May, I have appealed for all 4 schools. Unfortunately I will be forced to keep him out of school unless they get him a place locally, I will not be forced into losing my job, I can also not afford to travel 2 towns in the opposite direction to drop him off before work as we only have one car so it will be me who need to get him there before I go to work. I also think he will suffer socially not making friends where he lives and he's quiet and shy.
Surely by keeping him out of school you would have to look after him during the day and would probably lose your job anyway, or am i reading it wrong?.

I think LittlePea17 probably plans to keep him in his current childcare situation, which I assume is near her work (plus she mentions her husband works shifts so may well look after their child while she works). Children do not have to receive an education (in law) until the term after their fifth birthday so she has the option to keep her son in childcare until then and even after that can choose to home educate.

  • hi I wonder if any of you could help, I'm totally new to this whole school process and posting on here.

I applied for my daughters reception place and have been told I was not successful, I am now going through the appeals process and getting everything ready to send off.

My problem is, I have no school at all for her starting September, I am trying to apply for other local schools but have already been turned down off one, if I get turned down from the second local school I don't know what I'm going to do, I feel physically sick and haven't slept since recieving the first letter a week ago and I haven't stopped crying either, I can't get her to any other schools as they are too far away and I don't drive.. what will happen come June/July at my appeal if I lose and still have no place at a school for her come September? I suffer from bad anxiety and this whole thing has got me on edge,

The local authority should have allocated you a school, even if you didn't put it on your list.

You should also be applying for a list of schools in order of preference, not just one.

If the primary school you are allocated is over 2 miles away, then the local authority should pay the transport costs. There are conditions, basically that it is the nearest school with an available place. If there is no public transport to school, the authority will have a way of sorting it out - be it a taxi with other local children or school bus...

In your shoes, I would be phoning the education department of your local authority on Monday morning and ask them which school they have allocated you. It maybe an admin error, or it may be that the information is there but you haven't found it.

On what grounds are you appealing? You're going to need much more than difficulty getting to another school for an infant class size appeal. Was the allocation criteria applied correctly?
  • I've been in contact with school admissions, my online portal is saying place offered, just not saying where, yet school admissions are saying I need to apply for a place elsewhere, guess I'll just have to wait until Monday morning and ring up and get straight answers, thanks for reply
  • I'm applying on social needs, she struggled settling into the nursery setting, we repeat ourselves everytime she has a school holiday and it steps us back, she's been having extra support from nursery staff and me being able to say "well you'll see so-so" has helped her regain confidence in settling in, quicker. Going to another school she won't cope, I know she won't, she'll become confused and disruptive because she won't understand why I'm placing her in an unfamiliar environment for 6+ hours with people she doesn't know..

We literally missed out because of catchment and we're a street away from the border line, I also help collect the cousins who attend the same school I'm appealing for and my aunt can't afford child care so I help her out that way, which is another way I know my child would cope better as she'd be able to see her cousins at breaktimes so she wouldn't be completely alone, where as in a diff school she wouldn't know anyone and like I said previous she struggled to gain friendships and settle in

in regards to 'IAmWales' and 'silvercar'
I replied above but not sure how to use this site, can I also add, I am not eligible for free school transport if I select another school other than the one in my catchment area, so if I receive the school place I am going to ring up and enquire about Monday morning I may be able to receive free transport but my child is 3, 4 in august and I wont be sending her in a taxi or on the bus by herself..

You're doing great. We can see your replies.

The rules on school transport are complicated, but basically if you applied for the nearest school and didn't get a place and then the council allocated you a different school, they should be providing transport if this is over 2 miles away. So if the council's allocation policy is forcing you over the 2 miles rule, they should be providing transport.

Any taxi or bus provided by the council will have the driver and escort checked out (DBS etc), it also provides a way for your child to get to know a few other kids outside of the busy school environment. Anyway this is jumping ahead - sort the school place first.
