Replacing timber wall with brick

Hi all,

Looking for some high level advice before speaking to a professional. We have an extension to our house which is timber framed and timber clad - there is no masonry at all. This would be fine, but if it’s not very soundproof and we’re near a road.

The ground floor is brick built so the foundations are all there, but I’m wondering how big a job it would be to take the timber panels off the wall, build the wall up to the roof and then potentially put the timber back over the top.

We’re in a conservation area, but it’s at the back of the house so not sure if we’d need planning permission.

Thanks

Sam

The foundation will not be designed to support the extra weight.

Rather that the outside walls, could you insulate and soundproof using acoustic board inside.

Not necessarily true, but it would need to be checked.
  • Thanks guys. We have used sound proofing inside but we just get all the low pitch noise coming in and not much noise reduction.

Interesting point on the foundations...potentially not as simple as I thought!

Is this over-cladding with brickwork or a straight replacement of the timber stud wall with brickwork? The former would mean that the walls would be pushed out and this could interfere with roof eaves and windows. The latter would mean major temporary works to support the roof and also internal disruption.
  • It would be a straight replacement of the timber stud. We are planning on applying for planning permission to extend the same room over two floors so would need to have the scaffolding etc set up in any case. We just want to extend the works round to the side that is not being extended to get rid of any timber framing. Getting an architect to have a look in the New Year to see what they think
